Mid and Long Term Flood Mitigation Plans Detailed
By 250 News
Prince George, B.C. - As crews continue working to raise a section of River Road, City Manager Derek Bates has outlined two plans to City Council which Council has adopted.
The first recommendation calls for a comprehensive review of the "mid term and long term risks associated with river flows and ice conditions affecting the City of Prince George, and identification of flood control solutions and atheir associated capital cost estimates"
The recomendation calls on the City to ask, through the Provincial Emergency Program, for government to "engage a team of professionals to complete the recommended technical and financial evaluation work."
The second recommendation says that "significant capital expense will be asociated with a preferred solution" so it suggests that as the first project is being carried out, that at the same time, there be work undertaken to identify possible funding sources, and engage in discussions with "other governments, first nations, and industry and seek their respective commitments to mid and long term solutions."
Mayor Colin Kinsley says Minister for Public Safety and Solicitor General John Les is aware of the recommendations, and has assured the Mayor his office will support the recommendations.
The Mayor has confidence there will be funding as the Province has committed $10 million a year for flood mitigation, and there is some indication the Federal government may match those funds so there would be $20 million available a year.

I would suggest that we should be looking for someone at City hall that knows what they are doing other then looking for funding.
