Charges Laid In Summer Stand-off Near Vanderhoof

Prince George, B.C. - Charges have now been laid in connection with a two-day manhunt this past August that began with shots fired at RCMP in Fraser Lake, included a hostage-taking, and ended with the suspect being arrested in the woods near Vanderhoof.
21-year-old Richard Zagwyn made his first court appearance in Surrey, B.C. to face a total of 23 charges -- the most serious being robbery, kidnapping using a firearm, and six counts relating to discharging a firearm with intent to wound, endanger life and prevent arrest. He's been remanded in custody until his next appearance on March 10th.
RCMP Spokesperson, Constable Annie Linteau, says the charges stem from a series of incidents that occurred late last August, beginning when a vehicle failed to stop for police in Fraser Lake. Linteau says when officers located the vehicle in a ditch a short distance away, the driver fired shots at them before fleeing into the woods.
Linteau says the area was immediately cordoned off and RCMP resources from across the province were called in. By the following evening, she says, "Police obtained information that the suspect had left the Fraser Lake area, (and) was now in a wooded area near Vanderhoof with a hostage. Emergency Response Teams were called in and there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and police."
The following morning, the male hostage was located as he walked out of the woods on the Stoney Reserve near Vanderhoof. ERT officers arrested the suspect without incident less than one hour later.
