Latest Tally Released On Dealing With Icejam

Prince George, B.C. - Dealing with the Nechako River icejam has cost the City $3.5-million dollars to date.
The City's Information Liaison Officer, Kevin Brown, says that figure does not include the costs incurred by the Provincial Emergency Program (PEP) in assisting the City during this crisis. And while he doesn't know that figure for certain, he estimates it would be in excess of $1-million dollars.
The total is considerably higher than Premier Gordon Campbell's estimate of $3-million during his stop to view the damage in Prince George back on January 13th.
But Brown says there's been no upper limit set on the province's commitment. "None that has been talked about so far by the Premier, the Solicitor-General, or anyone else. The instructions from the Premier, the Ministers, and, of course, our own three MLAs is that 'Whatever it takes Prince George, we the Province of B.C., will be here for you to deal with this emergency, as long as it takes.'"
Brown says there is a system of checks-and-balances in place to ensure the dollars being spent are absolutely necessary. He says the City submits its planned expenditures to PEP officials for approval, prior to purchasing.
"Only work that is absolutely necessary to provide for the safety of the citizens of Prince George is approved."

I am concerned about the safety of the operators. When the water backs up to the point where the ice has to give way, there is going to be a lot of shifting of ice and the water is going to go somewhere downstream. Better be ready to get out of the way quickly, or they will be hooped.
And there is not much that we can do about it. I suggest everyone who is at risk consider evacuating their property very soon. The writing is pretty well on the wall, don't you think? Or, do we need an expert to highlight the dangers? Chester
