Prince George, B.C.-      The name of the city's newest music festival could not be more appropriate...

Coldsnap 2008 begins this evening in Prince George with a concert at Vanier Hall, entitled "Passion and Peace" featuring Martyn Joseph and Leroy Bell & His Only Friends Band, with special guests, the Vanway Trebles.

This winter festival will replace the Prince George Folk Festival that had been held in the summer at Fort George Park.  Organizers felt the number of summer events put them in a competing position for attendees and they're hoping the hot musical groups lined up over the coming week will draw city residents out of the winter doldrums.

Tomorrow's event at the Prince George Playhouse is "Hot Jazz from the Hot Club of France to Havana" -- with the Afro-Cuban groups, Zapato Negro and Van Django.

The festival wraps up next Saturday night with, "The Big Indie" at Art Space.  More information is available at www.coldsnapfestival.com

Tickets are $25 per concert or three concerts for $60 and are available at Books & Co., Studio 2880 and Meow Records.

I wish I wsa still up in PG and thus could get out and enjoy some of the great music happening with Coldsnap! It is true that many of us have never heard of the individual musicians or bands but that does not mean that their music is not great and in many cases better than what the "music industry" throw at us. It is good to see that the "music industry" is going backwards, while more and more people are taking advantage of enjoying what is often the best music around and they are heading out to the live performances in the smaller venues. In music, bigger is often not better.
