Prince George, B.C. -  More than 200 people turned out to a luncheon hosted by the Prince George Spirit of B.C. Committee at the Civic Centre this afternoon to hear the keynote address from John Furlong.

The head of the 2010 Olympic Organizing Committee did his best to convince the crowd of the endless possibilities for the entire country in light of the upcoming Winter Games in Vancouver.

Furlong points to the Northern Sports Centre, as one such benefit that’s already been realized in the run up to the Games.  He toured the $31-million dollar facility this morning and says it "took his breath away" and should go a long ways towards leveraging Prince George efforts to attract athletes to train in the region prior to the Olympics.

Furlong also credits the local Spirit of B.C. Committee with making the most of the opportunities available.

"I deal with all the committees and they’re all good, this one is particularly good -- they’re very focused, they’re learning all the time, they’re thinking about Beijing and if there’s something there that they can leverage."

(Furlong speaking with some of those in attendance after the luncheon)

He says, "For a community that’s located 500-miles away from the epicentre of the Games, you would think the epicentre is much closer because the activity level is so high."

But he says "While all of that is important, and, you’ll see as you go forward, there will be all kinds of events that will come here -- the real win, here, is the young people of the community have found themselves a venue that’s going to  make their lives better and that’s huge."

As was the case this morning, the Olympic mascots rounded out Furlong’s visit

About the only benefit our region will see from the Olympics is the endless parade of high paid consultants coming to PG to tell you the "Possibilities Endless" and yet not one can give you a "Reality for sure" of a tangible benefit that someone has in mind and will come to fruition.

Until some sort of National sport training centre is located here, with proper funding, will there be any benefit of the Olympics.

What amazes me is that PG thinks we are the only ones out there catering to the various Olympic teams. Kamloops, Kelowna, even Vernon are going after their share as well and much closer to Vancouver, with good AIR !
The olympics now are a waste of money for BC and will only help put the province on the brink of bankruptcy. Plus those mascots look like something out of a bad japenese anime cartoon.
..ain't it the truth!
My favourite thing about the Olympics is how it's such a huge cultural event, on equal footing with sports, right up until the awarding of the winning bid.

Go back and look at the promo videos:

"Because it's about so much more than sport."

And MOST of this one is culture:

So what happened?
He says, "For a community that’s located 500-miles away from the epicentre of the Games, you would think the epicentre is much closer because the activity level is so high."....

Okay, so he figures that if the Winter Olympics would not be happening in Vancouver in 2010, then we would not have received the money for the Sports Facility at UNBC ....

Kind of hard to prove or disprove that I would say.....

So, what does the list of activities and financial benefits look like for this community. Can we look at it somewhere? Which companies have and will be benefitting? etc. etc.

All I see on these kind of reports is generalities. They seem to be the same everytime sombody from the south visits .... keep the natives in ths north happy...

Maybe there are pretty and glossy brochures that get printed in Vancouver they take with them to give people at these events ....

;-)
go argos!
It's endless alright. Similar to wiping your arse with a hoop.
The Olympics will last only 18 days; I don't see much coming out of it. Although after the demolition of Vancouver's Expo 86 development, the north side of False Creek was developed. Of interest is the fact that most Olympic construction in Vancouver is going up on the south side. I counted 13 construction cranes at work yesterday.
Why would Furlong even waste his time coming here?
"Why would Furlong even waste his time coming here?"
Politics duffer,it's called politics!
While we in the north will get nothing out of the Olympics, the government still likes to have as much support for the "games" as they can muster.
Furlong's trip to PG is a simply a glad handing social call.
Because when it's all over and the real costs are known,,they are going to need all the support they can get!!
It's really going to hurt!
The money the Campbell government is pumping into the lower mainland as well as the Olympics,is out of control, and we already know who gets to pay for all that!
I think the mongolian bob sled team was looking at working out in the new sports centre...in exchange for trade development trips and cultural exchange from city hall.
BWAHAHAHAHA
The bob sled team from Madagascar will be next...as soon as they can find bob who got lost in the tropical jungle again.
I can hardly wait for Canadians to welcome the world to Vancouver/Whistler...
The unbelievable feeling of watching our first Canadian gold medal on our soil...and watching our mens and womens hockey teams kick butt...
Like the Vancouver Expo, the 2010 Olympics will be a show case for the world to set the bar against.

My god...a poster boy for the Olympics!
Talk about buying the bulls**t!
The 2010 Olympics gives BC, and the rest of Canada the rare opportunity to showcase not only sports but the economy to the world. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to market our strengths on a global scale!! Where else and when else will you have a global audience?? So stop poo-pooing the Olympics and think Marketing and Economic impact. Our Mayor has been wooing the world. What have you been doing? Put our best foot forward, because the world IS watching.
You bet the world is watching! Watching our govt flush our tax dollars right down the drain. Have a tour around the internet and see how long it has taken countries and provinces to pay for their olympic events. It took Quebec over 30 years to pay their olymic bill off! Now if the economics of the olympics are soo lucrative then they should be albe to at least get in the clear or see some profit gain. As a tax payer im having a very hard time putting my best foot forward watching our govt dumping ridiculous amounts of money into polising vancovuers image.
