Aerial Tour Of Nechako Icejam

Prince George, B.C. - The head of the Nechako River icejam continues to work its way upstream...
Emergency Officials with the City and Regional District of Fraser-Fort George, and the Ministry of Environment’s Flood Hazard Technician, Lyle Larsen, took a helicopter tour over the span of the icejam yesterday afternoon.
The ice now stretches from the Nechako’s confluence with the Fraser to just 2.5-kilometres shy of its confluence with the Chilako River, putting the total length at approximately 31-kilometres.
However, the 7.5-km channel at the foot of the jam remains open, and water continues to flow freely. City officials say water levels continue to drop in the lower Nechako.
Regional District spokesperson, Renee McCloskey, says the new ice at the head of the jam is fairly consistent in nature, and does not appear to be a jamming of the soft frazil ice that makes up the bulk of the river’s blockage.
She says the roads and driveways along the Old Takla Forest Road remain open, and there does not appear to be any immediate risk to the homes in the area.
The situation remained relatively unchanged in Miworth, as well, with no immediate risks noted in the area.
Both the Regional District and City will continue monitoring the river through the weekend.
