Prince George, B.C. -  Prince George City Councillors will consider a request to support the creation of a ’Sport Council of Prince George’ (SCPG) at this evening’s meeting.

The group has developed a Mission statement, its goals and priorities and will appear before council to seek an $8-thousand dollar base budget and a Memorandum of Understanding with the City.

The Sport Council hopes to act as one voice for all the local sporting groups.  At an initial ’interest’ meeting, representatives from more than 50 local sporting organizations turned out, and 38 subsequently completed an on-line survey.

A volunteer board has identified seven priorities, based on results from the survey:

  • develop new facilities
  • maintain new facilities
  • improve coordination among sports
  • advocate for additional funding
  • promote participation in sport
  • identify funding sources
  • training for coaches and officials

The group foresees an annual budget of $16-thousand and, if granted half from the City, would rely on fundraising, memberships, sponsorships, advertising and programs to raise the remainder.

The City’s Leisure Services Department is recommending Council agree to enter into a M.O.U. with the SCPG and refer the funding request to the 2008 budget deliberations

It is unfortunate that PASHA, the Nachako and other groups in the City would unite and give City council some direction as to what their priorities should be when it comes to managing the affairs of the City.

But I guess sports are more important then roads and snow removal.

Cheers
Sport is an important economic driver in this city. The amount of $$$ that flow into this city from tournaments, events and other sporting functions is a HUGE impact. $8k is nothing to help out a large group of overworked volunteers in EVERY sport.
I give them full credit for pulling together a collective to ensure sport's voice is heard. Maybe the other groups in town who want to influence Council can learn a lesson.
With the sports hearts on the city council I have no doubt this will passs with flying colors....
Early vote deposits????????
What do you bet that this will end up being just another ineffective and costly city bureaucracy ?
I can't believe that something like this is not in place already! If done properly, there could be huge improvemnt in facilties and possibly less 'doubling up'.
Having been involved in a number of sport organizations from City to National in nature, the criteria for this groups sounds all to familiar. The mandate is similar to all organizations at all levels.

I was involved in an organization in Port Coquitlam in the early 70`s with the same mandates and works quite well to this day.

Recognizing that it is an administrative nightmare for the volunteer, it will not be for the faint at heart.
"Sport is an important economic driver in this city"

If sports is such an economic force in this City I wonder why the tax payer owned facilities are continualy runing in the red. And why is it that every project the City is involved in has to have an economic drive. And why is it that my tax money is always at the forfront to create an economc drive.

Here is why my dollars are so important for the Holly Grail is because our business operaters have no imagination and are dependent on tax money to survive. What ever happened to free enterprise?

Cheers
Bridge has it right. All these people do is ask for more funding. Look at their prioritys, new facilities and advocate for more funding.

We have bought and paid for a huge multi plex that the Citizens of Prince George cannot skate on. We have the Coliseum where we get 1 and 1/2 hours pubic skating
Monday to Thursday, and 2 hours per day Sat and Sun.This facility in run by the Y. Then its off to the Elkscentre for 1 hour and 15 minutes for family, then 1 hour and 15 minutes for teen skating Friday nights. Thats about it, the rest of the time is hogged by organized hockey, and other organizations, including the Cougers who use a lot of ice time and cost us a fortune to keep around.

The Ice Oval will cost us 8 to 9 Million before it is finished and will be hogged by a handfull of pseudo speedskaters who will try to keep the general public off as much as possible.

The SportPlex on the hill is being utilized by organized groups, basketball, soccer, etc; while the weight room and track is open to the public for in excess of $500.00 per year for couples of familys, needless to say there are very few people using this facility.

So there you have it. Taxpayers build the facilities, but are not encouraged to use them, so they clear off a space at a school tennis court, or rent a school gym, and the vested interest groups get the gravy. (Whats new?)

By the way, whats the latest on the gravel that was taken from the Oval and sold to CN Rail. Last I heard we were waiting for the release of some information from the City through the **Freedom of Information**. Is the information still forthcoming, or has the issue very quietly been dropped.????
