Teachers to Walk Friday

Friday, Teachers across the province will walk off the job and there is no telling how long they will stay off the job.

The BCTF says teachers voted  90.5% in favour of the job action which they say will last until there is an accepted resolution.

School District 57  anticipated trouble, and sent home letters with many students today, advising parents that possible job action was in the works.  The letter advises that in the event of job action, school busses will not run and schools will be closed.  Parents are advised to make some other arrangements for care for their children during this job action.

The BCTF President, Jinny Sims,  and  B.C. Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair  will meet with Labour Minister Mike deJong Thursday.

de Jong says the session will not impact the passage of Bill 12, which extends the teachers contract to the end of June 2006.  That bill is expected to be passed tomorrow.

Although I do not know the details of the negotiations, it would seem the teachers have no reasonable choice. It appears that the government has not been able to address the issues adequately which have caused the "problems" to persist for 10 years, according to the current Minister of Education. Why it takes that long to fix such "problems" between employer and employees is beyond me.

From my point of view, the communication of both parties to the general population of this province which pays taxes and expects both parties to do the work they are being paid to do, borders on negligence. What are the real issues and where do both parties stand on them? How close are they to an agreement and, if not that close, what is the rationale for each party's position?

the problem i have with the above statements is that there is no mention of education only that alternate DAYCARE is required.
Owl, you are way too reasonable on this one I suspect. Pure and simple it a power trip by the BCTF to force their demands and has nothing to do with the facts of the matter regarding children. We have teachers in our family so I'm pretty familar with the grassroots issues, and they aren't there. The best simile would be to view the dispute as a rich NDP labour front feeling their oats. The BCTF is doing a good job of propaganda, and they do know what they are doing. Just compare your reactions if you were in Germany in 1936 and someone was screaming about the Jews. After a while no one can reason anymore.
