The College of New Caledonia and the University of Northern British Columbia will be working with the Lake Babine Nation to implement a Carrier language program this fall.

Students completing the program will have the opportunity to obtain a certificate from the BC College of Teachers that will enable them to teach Carrier language in local schools.

“Education is vital for the preservation of our language and culture, and this new partnership is an exciting development for the Lake Babine Nation,” says Chief Betty Patrick.

The official agreement will be signed tomorrow at the Tribal Office Board Room  in Burns Lake.

Courses in the program will be taught at the CNC campus in Burns Lake as well as in classrooms within the Lake Babine Nation. Instructors from the College, University, and the Lake Babine Nation will be involved in the delivery of this program, which is expected to attract about 25 students.

Carrier language? That ought to stand out on someones resume. Definately a plus. I'm sure that these language skills will be of some value. Anyone for Latin?
Harbinger,
If a language dies, so does the culture in which it was spoken. Residential schools came within a hair's breadth of destroying the language and the culture when they kidnapped the Carrier children. The language is now enjoying a bit of a resurgence and I commend UNBC and CNC for what they are doing.
Good for you.
