N o Change In Local Unemployment Rate

Prince George B.C. - There was no change in the unemployment rate for Prince George in January.  According to the latest numbers forom Statistics Canada, the rate  was 5.1% unchanged from December, but  down  a little more than full percentage point from  January of 2007.

For the Cariboo region, the  rate  inched up to 5.2 percent from the 5.0 mark  in December.

OK, how come this is happening with all the lay offs etc from the mills?
Maybe most of these jobs are "Wendy's Wages" jobs. Minimum wage minus training.
The mills are closing on a temporary basis. I understand that many are not laid off. That is why, as someone has posted on here, they cannot get any re-training money and UIC coverage. So, they are hooped.

The system seems to not be designed to accommodate such situations. Then again, maybe it is, just not in favour of the worker.
A great many of these jobs involve "Wendy's Wages" but that never seems to be discussed.
I guess a job is a job when it come to these stats,but I really think these numbers mean very little when it comes to actually judging true economic conditions.
I find it hard to believe that the unemployment rate has not changed substancially, considering what we actually know to be taking place in the forest industry.
