Prince George, B.C. - A Retired member of the Federal Women’s Committee , Ginger Bacchus , has written to correct the comments from the BC  Manager of Communications for Federal Institutions ,Dave Lefebvre, who said that 35 year old Lisa Whitford who will raise her child while serving  4 years in prision for the shooting death of her common law husband in Prince George.

Whitford was in the early stages of pregnancy at the time of the shooting and her child was born while she was in custody.

According to manager of Communications for BC, Dave Lefebvre ,"This will be the first time that an inmate will be able to raise her child while in custody in a federal institution."   The program has been available in provincial prisons.   The child will remain with the mother in custody until the child reaches four years of age. Whitford has two children from a previous relationship.

The item reporting "Women Guilty of Shooting Will Raise Her Baby in Prison’s Special Mother’s Unit".
The information you received from Prison spoke person Dave Lefebvre is incorrect. The program has been in effect in Federal Women’s Institutions for the past 10 years or more. This is one program we  (the Federal Women’s Intuitive Committee) worked hard to convince CSC to implement in the Institutions including the Healing Lodge in Saskatewan when these facilities opened in the 90’s.
For your information.

At least she is under constant supervision while doing this. Besides, I think I read that she was using drugs while pregnant, so the child will likely have some problems. Might as well be her that stays up all night listening to a baby that won't stop crying.
At least the kid will have a whole prison cell for a playpen. And she won't have to worry about finding the kid a dependable and trustworthy babysitter where she is staying. Life is good. Prison pablum? Yuck!!
