Prince George -     Blasting will take place along a stretch of highway 97 in the Pine Pass today as workers attempt to dislodge a major snow slide. At present there is an extreme risk of a further avalanche near the site  where yesterday  a tractor trailer unit was partially stuck when the slide struck . The driver escaped without injury. A second vehicle is believed to have escaped serious injury. Police would like to talk to the driver of that vehicle.

At the same time police are seeking the whereabouts of 71 year old Volker Kroecher, and 72 year old Morfydd Kroecher, they are driving a 2002 Honda Civic, gray, 4 doors with BC license number 517fgd , and were driving from Ft St John to Vancouver.

According to family members it is not unusual for them to change course without notifying loved ones, but police are asking for your assistance.

Meantime highway 97 is expected to be closed until at least Wednesday afternoon. Crews will first conduct blasting then equipment will be brought in to clear the road

Avalanche control used to be done on a lot of highways in B.C.at one time.
Does anyone know if it was this done away with too in recent years, or is it still done on a regular basis?
Good point. Haven't heard of any road closures due to avalanche control lately, except where the avalanche has already come down on it's own.
I saw a helicopter doing avalanche control a couple of weeks ago in the pass
