Ft. St John - Fire crews in Ft St John are fighting a fire that broke out early this afternoon in the HL Powell Warehouse in Ft St John.
Fire fighters say they believe that the structure contains sacks of drilling mud (pocked in bags like cement), undetermined chemicals for the oilfield and plastic barrels containing methanol.
Efforts at 3:00 pm were trying to prevent the fire from spreading to a nearby warehouse which also contains similar materials.
The Fort St. John RCMP wish to advise the public that the road closures in the areas surrounding the structure fire are still in effect. The building, which is an oilfield chemical storage facility, is owned by Formula Powell LP and is located at 10223 116 street, in Fort St. John.
The Fort St. John RCMP have gone door to door to residences in the Clairmont Subdivision to advise the occupants of the potential health risks from the fire due to the large amount of smoke that is being carried by the wind over their subdivision.
The Fort St. John RCMP are urging the public to remain out of the direct area of the fire until the Fire Department has the fire under control. The Ministry of Environment has Emergency Response Officer’s on scene and they are continuing to evaluate the environmental impact of the fire.
