Local State of Emergency To Soon End

Prince George, B.C, - The state of emergency declared in Prince George when the Nechako River spilled its banks in mid December will soon be over.
The declaration will not be renewed when it expires at 1 p.m. Thursday February 14th. That will mean the declaration was in place for 66 days.
Emergency Operations Chief, Jeff Rowland says river levels are normal now, and Ministry of Environment and Emergency operations staff will conduct twice weekly flights over both rivers for the short term to monitor changing conditions. Basically, it’s believed the warmed temperatures and the open channels have eliminated any immediate threat of flooding.
Rowland says people will be able to go into their homes to assess the damage, but it is unlikely the homes are habitable.
The cost of dealing with the ice jam and emergency response has hit $4.33 million while costs for recovery activities have now reached nearly $32 thousand dollars.
There is a community information meeting this evening, it will be the last meeting of its type. The meeting is set for 7 p.m. at the Civic Centre room 103. Future sessions will be more focused on those who have been directly impacted by the flood.
