Prince George, B.C. - Last year, municipal taxpayers in Prince George saw a new line item on their tax form. It was  to collect funds for road repair.

The amount collected may have to be boosted.

Development Services Manager, Bob Radloff says  his department is looking at revising the cost of road repair "As you know asphalt prices have gone up drastically and of course there is always labour, materials and equipment costs, so yes, we  are revisiting it."

Radloff says he can’t yet speak to  what the amounts might be, but  the full report and recommendations will be brought to Prince George City Council in August.

Any increase won’t have any impact on the  current budget discussions, but will  impact the  taxes paid in 2009.

Maybe they should start fixing the roads first, then ask for an increase.

Just a thought....
This request for additional funds is outrageous !!! The original, ridiculous line item should never have been approved IMO.

This is pure greed on the part of admin... financial bullying and total irresponsibility ... complete, unashamed pocketpicking !!!!

Arrrgggghhhh.
We need an expert from Vancouver to do another study.
THE JERKS AT CITY HALL ALREADY INCREASED OUR TAXES 4% TO PAY FOR ROAD REPAIRS.
THEY HAVEN'T DONE ANY YET.
THEY CAN KISS MY BUTT IF THEY THINK I'LL PAY MORE.
Heres a thought...send the tax increase to all the truckers that the city allows to park in residential areas. Perhaps they could split the increase with city council.
I wonder how much of the price increase has to do with the hassle the asphalt plants have had to put up with? There has to be costs associated with being hassled all summer.

We drive up their costs and then complain about paying for it? Funny.
How about giving us a taxpayers a money back guarantee - if after collecting the additional new taxes the roads are still not fixed (some need to be completely repaved, they are beyond patching and lumping!!!) we will get our money back plus interest?

This road maintenance and pot hole repair department seems to be collecting money in a sack with a big hole in the bottom, in my opinion.
Of course they are increasing the tax, how else would the idiots at cuty hall pay for raising river road? Hmmmm? I woorl in the BCr yards and i swear they do as little as possible to repair the roads out here, especially Pacific Street, From Lomak to Rustads, full of nast holes not pot holes anymore, holes that will swallow tires and you cant swerve to avoid them since the road is so narrow. All over town roads are in poor shape. But hey when you need a storm drain unplugged they will send five guys to doit, 1 to dig around and 4 others to watch and scratch there heads.

Gee whiz folks. I sure hope we don't develop any kind of amnesia in November when it comes to turfing these bozos out of city hall. Seems I read everyday about some reason. Kinda like a dictatorship with their hands constantly in our pockets. Can anyone new do any worse? Grrtrrr.
When they asked for the "special road repair levy" they (City hall) said it was for ONLY ONE YEAR.
Up Up and away
Maybe Ben can find out how much they spent on cracksealing last year (2007) and also find out what then spent in 2006. I think we all will find out that the 4% tax increase did not go to road repairs. I heard (rumor now)that they only cracksealed for 1 month in 2007 and 2 months in 2006 yet they had 4% more to spent in 2007.Something tells me if they give Ben the numbers they will be fudged anyway.
Would any of you care to sit on the budget committee or finance committee and figure out where to get more money from to meet the increased costs of repairs, maintenance and infrastructure or rehab needs in this city?

I am going to guess that about 90% of the city budget is already pre-committed, an obligation already or maintaining previous committments already made. I would like to suggest that they probably only have about 10% of the budget to actually discuss and have any choices over. They don't have as many options as one might think. Chester
The city needs to remove their heads from the sand and stop throwing money at special interest groups such as the CN Centre, Sport Centre, Ice Oval, Art Gallery etc and commit to first upholding their basic mandate of running the city IE maintaining roads and infrastructure, and overseeing and regulating private industries that can take care of all these special interest groups.

If there is not enough support for the special interest groups from private industry then guess what, no building for you!!
Next Civic Election - Time to clean house! It seems the only solution they have is to raise taxes. CUT COSTS!
