Hydro Rates Expected to Jump

Your Hydro  rates  are expected to  jump by 14% over the next two years.  B.C. Hydro   has applied for the price hike.

BC Hydro  says the   hike is needed, in part to pay for  infrastructure upgrades, like  power lines, dams and the generating stations.

According to B.C. Hydro if the  requested hike is approved, it would add no more than $5 a month to  average B.C. Hydro  customer's bill.

You can expect  a partial rate boost on the first of April.

Where have all the profits gone over the past years? And now we realize that we need to do some maintenance! Or are we getting ready for cost over runs for the greatest (costlyest) show on earth the hallowed olympics.

Cheers
It is also being driven by how the Liberals have hampered BCHydro by making them having to purchase hydro from Private generation sources at inflated rates, so the private companies can make huge profits. This is only the beginning folks.
I will show them. I will just change to a different Hydro company. I thought free enterprise means competition?
Folks the real truth is just what lunarbase wrote. Hydro has signed very expesive cotracts to the Independent power producers. Hydro was forced to do this by the government. It would be very interesting to chase the money trail on this.
""According to B.C. Hydro if the requested hike is approved, it would add no more than $5 a month to average B.C. Hydro customer's bill.""

Wow, it sure would be nice if a 14% increase in our hydro bill only came out to $5.00 per month !!!!! You'd have to awful studid to believe these figures.

Of course they are going to jump...
with all this conservation that has been going on, or that Hydro has been promoting, they aren't making their dollar so the price rises....what a gimmick...
OLYMPICS

I agree, if my bill goes up 14% it will be a lot more than $5 / month!

Keep it in perspective though,
http://www.bchydro.com/info/epi/epi45408.html

Alberta is almost twice as high per KW / Hour..
My family is building a new house this summer. We have investgated a number of possiblities for alternate power and heating sources. They are out there! YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE ON HYDRO OR TERASEN! We are going to use the same system a freind of our family uses in Alberta. he has no hydro hook up or gas and saves a TON! Not only that but he has all the standard home appliances(PC,LCD tv's, fridge, stove...ETC)his whole system is backed up by a small gas generator. He has had to fill it 4 times so far this winter....ya thats right a few gallons of gas 4 times ALL WINTER! the intial cost was a little high about 30,000 but take the average cost of powering and heating your home over just ten years and tell me it wasn't good investment for a family of 5! If more people start converting thier homes then we can start telling the oil and power conglomerates to go to hell!
This has been in the wind for a while, and that is why the Campbell gang brought in the carbon tax now!
In about 2 years this province will be in one hell of a mess!
If they tried to bring it in a year or two from now, there would be blood in the streets of Victoria!
And I agree with lostfaith...OLYMPICS.
It's all connected if you follow the trail far enough, but most people don't want to believe that yet.
Somebody get a rope!
50 000 newcomers a year, they all need hydro,
you have to add capacity, not rest on what
WAC Bennet build, they have a department called for casting, is everyone there sleeping or no one listening, all the money we paid to hydro, has it gone to general revenue, Olympics or whatever ? Stop talking and get to work, add more turbines to our hydro dams.

We are not using what WAC Bennet built. Some of the hydro electricity we have is being exported. As well lunarbase is correct, the BC LIberals have developed schemes that independent power producers (IPP's) will generate electricity and continue to raise their prices that we will pay for decades in the future. BC Hydro will also have to transmit the IPP's electricity to the US is that what the IPP"s want. Read more about this in a book called "Liquid Gold."
Why not. Everything else is going up except for wages for the working poor.
A very good point acrider54!
The cost of everything is rising at a pace never seen before, but our wages are staying about the same.
We are losing ground bigtime!
The price of gas for your car is up 40% in the last 5 years alone.
How much has wages increased ove rht e last 5 years?
Now we will likely see the highest prices for fuel ever.$1.30-$1.50 or even higher by mid-summe, and then the "carbon tax" will kick in July and the prices for what we buy will really climb.
Food,fuel,clothes,anything you can name.
Everything we use will be affected like never before and the government purse will get even fatter than it is now.
More for airfare,ferries,buses,everything.
But our wages have not increased.
Did we forget that part?
No,we just bent over and let them do it to us again!
What a bunch of sheep we are to allow these liars that we elected to get away with this.We get what we deserve, because we have forgotten who it is that these politicial theives actually work for.And don't they know it!
Those that think all this is ok now, will soon be singing a differet tune!
We ain't seen nothin'yet!
Reevus what is this amazing system you speak of? More importantly what is the payback in terms of years?

PS - Astro, BC is a net importer of power. We export in the summer when the dams have lot's of water, we import in the winter more than we sell in the summer.
