Fort Nelson, B.C. - Canfor is sparing the  Tackama plywood plant in Ft Nelson from closure.

Loggers  will be back in the bush  tomorrow morning,  and Fort Nelson Mayor Chris Morey is elated  "The agreement  was signed by  Minister  of  Forest and Range Rich Coleman.

Mayor Morey says the  plant was saved because of a lot of hard work by a lot of  people " I am very happy  with the end result.  This speaks well of all the people involved, the Provincial government,  Jay Hill,  the Regional District,  Canfor, last, but not least, the United Steelworkers and employees who took a pay cut  to keep the plywood mill running."

Morey says  Ft Nelson was due for  some good news, "Christmas came early."

Steelworkers local 1-424 2nd Vice President  Rod Park  says this is an example of "All parties working together  and  seeking  a common end.  We are going through some very difficult times in the forest industry and this kind of agreement shows  that when we all work together, we can make it work."

Keeping the mill operating saves 300  direct and  250 or so indirect jobs.

Excellent News!!!
Congratulations to all those involved in keeping the mill operating!
I wouldn't count on it lasting. Panel prices are still going down. I wouldn't be surprised if NCP shuts down at least temporarily in the near future.
Maybe it's time for a surcharge on the Chinese laminate imports. We're bringing a lot of these products in by the containerful!
China is buying wood from Russia,Don't let the Americans know how cheaply!!
RUEZ. Plywood prices always go down in spring and NCP is in a much different boat than Tackama. Costs, turnover, location all played a big part in this decision. Bottom line - some mills are losing alot less money than others, the ones that are bleeding the worst will go first. That and the pulpmills are making money, the mills that are running the most efficiently will continue to run in order to supply the lowest cost chips, (outside of the chip plant).
But... who knows with these economic conditions.
kitkat: NCP might be in a different boat, but the boat is still sinking.
Well I suppose we should all give up then.
Give up or not, we have very little say in what happens anyway. You and I don't control the price of panels, the value of the Canadian dollar, or the mortgage problem in the U.S.
