Prince George, B.C. – This afternoon, the Council for the City of Prince George will make the final decisions on the budget for 2008.

Up for discussion, several items which can only be paid for by an increase in taxes.

The City has already accepted that taxes will have to increase by 2.5% just to keep the status quo.  That’s because of wage increases and the increases in costs including energy.

If all the items that need tax dollars to operate are approved, then taxes would more than double as taxes would have to increase by 5.79%.

Here are the items that, if approved, would increase taxes:

Air Quality  initiatives
$63,000
Accounting and Reporting of Tangible Assets
$105,000
Parks Funding
$260,000
Transportation Pot Hole Patching

Prince George Public Library
$19,852

Taxes, taxes, taxes. Tax on everything. Taxes on taxes. Carbon tax. I'm sure glad the Liberals have turned this economy around. Too bad wages didn't go up to match the tax hikes, costs of groceries, fuel and everything else thats going up. We work just to pay all levels of government. Work, stay home and pay your taxes.
Approve them all. The same bunch will be back next year with another list.

If we keep seeing tax hikes like this every year, maybe the voters will realize it's time to clean house for a tax reduction.

Time this bunch woke up and smelled the coffee!

"Leadership Development $50,000"

Anyone know what this means?
Anyone know what this means?

Thats when they bring in a wizz that tells the managers how to rip us off and make us believe what a great bunch of leaders we have. The Mare will probably also attend this class.

"Budget Enhancements" Its the same old story the maintenance of our infrastucture comes under this classification. If you want it pay for it. Hurry November come quickly. The cup is half full.

Cheers
"Parks Boulevard Enhancements"

Last summer they were out mowing the boulavards long after the grass had turned brown

Accounting and Reporting of Tangible Assets
$105,000.00. Thats a real dandy. I have tears in my eyes like horse****rd. I had better leave now. Pas the cheese please the cup is half full.

Cheers
LMAO, Transportation pothole patching
$170,000.00.
Our taxes were already increased 4% to pay for pothole patching. With that 4% increase we have seen nothing. A 4% increase added up to how much more money in the cities coffers? You can be darn sure the city collected a wee bit more than $170,000.00 from the 4% increase.
Maybe they should pay $30,000.00 for the flood study, not the $200,000.00 already approved and use the other $170,000.00 to buy some nice city vehicles for them all to take a long drive off a short pier.
Although I don't look forword to and increase all I can say is that we should be happy that the peson who wrote this article is not an accountant for the city or we would have real problems
I don't know how a 5.79% increase is more that doubling our taxes but then the line wouldn't have as much impact then would it

Leadership development is a term used to describe week long retreats to Harrison Hotsprings.

SOUNDS GOOD BUD YOU CAN PAY MY SHARE
Thanks lostfaith!
I was just watching the budget meeting. It sounded like the November campaign was underway. There was so much redundancy in the comments, one parroting the other. The reason they get re-elected is the exposure they have to the non-discerning voters and some of them know how to play to the TV camera.
Perhaps future candidates could get some exposure earlier than the November forums. It would give the voters a better chance to know different names and platforms. Mind you I think the some of the voters in PG are pretty lazy and don't educate themselves.
CNC used to cover the Council meetings and produce a newspaper that was hilarious. Pity that UNBC or CNC aren't doing that today. It could be a Political Science unit worth three credits and then we could all gain from their observances.
Just a thought.
Time to clean house this election. Every year it is tax increases. The city better start looking at becoming effeciate and act like a business. Also if they want more revenue then stop turning away the big business that tries to come here in the last year and were turned away because city planning would not look at rezoning so the business went to another city = lost tax. PG City is not open for business.
Did you know that the city council has had a couple get away weekends every year? They used to go to Baldy Hughes on what they called a brainstorming weekend. All paid for by us the taxpayer. That’s right food and drink paid by us.
I think we as taxpayers should have the right to look into all these so called brain storming events as well as trips aboard.
Typical budget line items that should and probably are already included in the Amortization and Repair and replacement budgets. Looks like and smells like more BS to me.
Leadership Development - hah, not another retreat.
I thought the Mayor, council reps, and senior administration would have had some of these skills prior to getting their jobs. Perhaps a Resume review may be in order. Oh Yeah - November is coming yahoo!! Quick - start building your legacy monuments Mr Mayor.
