Prince George, B.C. -  When the  Provincial Finance Minister announced there would be $10 million dollars for communities to help with  roads pounded by the harvesting of beetle kill,  Prince George City Hall sat up and took notice.

Mayor Colin Kinsley says he is on the phone regularly with  Transportion Minister Kevin Falcon and  P.G. will certainly be applying for some of those dollars.  "I have had the discussions with him that we expect to be  lobbying hard  with our argument that because we are a large urban centre that has these trucks,  and uplift in the beetle thing, beating up our streets, we've got a plan.  The staff has has already identified the ones that are most in need.  You only have to drive down  5th Avenue and Carney in that area to see that."

Other areas says the Mayor, include, Queensway  and " If you've got the courage, take an older  4x4 and head out to Pacific Avenue in the BCR  industrial site,  I've joked about it, but there are some  pot holes that if you like we'll issue you a free fishing license."

Kinsley is optimistic the funding for those major  road rehabilitations will be provided.  In the meantime,  Council has improved  boosting  dollars for pot hole patching .  That budget has been increased by $170 thousand dollars.  Of course, the pothole patching  isn't meant to deal with the roads that need to be  rebuilt,  " Some could have you  patching pot holes  every day and it still wouldn't make a difference " says Mayor Kinsley.

Cracking jokes about about serious matters like deteriorated roads and the mine fields of potholes is not what I expect from our officials.

I expect action - *hope* for some future grants doesn't cut it.

Didn't we just get hit with a special annual levy on top of our taxes for road repair?

Frustrated.

When the Provincial Finance Minister announced there would be $10 million dollars for communities to help with roads pounded by the harvesting of beetle kill, Prince George City Hall sat up and took notice.

And therein lies the problem. Our City operates like there is an endless supply of funding available to them. If they cant get it in tax increases senior levels of government will provde more money for them.

Last year we were saddled with a 4% levy for road rehabilitation and this year we get hit with another increase for pothole repair. They had the nerve to increase city staff. How much worse can it get. The list is endless.

Cheers
The pot holes and probems on 5th and Carney are a direct result of the Citys decision not to repair the Cameron St Brdge.
They are responsible, however they will never admit it.
The bridge could have been repaired - as you so often pointed out - and the traffic could still be going across it as before.

Any new grant moneys should be dedicated to a dangerous goods route and a new river crossing in a different location.

This has been very evident and glaringly obvious but for some reasons nixed by those who manage (or mismanage) the long range planning of this city.

With the latest brainwave they are going to bless us with a new wood burning power plant placed in the very downtown where the air is usually unfit for breathing without any new pollution source added to it.
