Prince George, B.C. -   When the dust had settled following  last night's  budget discussions,   Prince George City Council had agreed to boost your municipal taxes by 4.36%.

That is the highest increase since 2001,  when the hike was  4.35%.  Mayor Colin Kinsley says  when you go  back to 2001,  Prince George was in transition "We thought, my goodness we can't have a tax increase, so we  attacked the accumulated  surpluses which are supposed to be for a rainy day,  We had two years  where we had like a zero increase."

Kinsley  lead that position, and says looking back  it was  a mistake "We should have had something, we should have  had at least the cost of living in there, so we had to do some  catch up.  I think this 4.36%  is just the reality of  just some of the costs that are beyond our control."

Items like staff increases,  and CCTV  to check  storm  drainage or sewars were left on the table, while all the items that  are linked to quality of life  or public safety were  given a green light.  Does that  mean some will see this as an election budget?  "I don't hink it  had anything to do with the election" says Mayor Kinsley " The beauty of this Council is the individual view on priorities, it took a bit of courage to go ahead with some of them when the general thoughts are we shouldn't do anything above CPI."

The Mayor  says  this budget is 'defensible'  "That's not to say there won't be  people who will be upset.  The next trick will be setting of the classes of the tax rate and that will take place in the next coming weeks."

"Kinsley lead that position, and says looking back it was a mistake" "We should have had something, we should have had at least the cost of living"....another mistake by a man who doesn't know what he is doing!!!!
Anyone need a wage raise
How bout a 10% wage decrease for city hall for starters?
Fun times ahead!!
Did you know that the city council has had a couple get away weekends every year? They used to go to Baldy Hughes on what they called a brainstorming weekend. All paid for by us the taxpayer. That’s right food and drink paid by us.
I think we as taxpayers should have the right to look into all these so called brain storming events as well as trips aboard.
Maybe we should send the mayor back to China to do more advertising for raw log exports!....lol......god I cannot believe the state of politics in this town! WHEN we will we finally close the book on these morons?!
If were are going to take it in the rear end again from the municipality, then lets hope that this time we are able to see some evidence of what has been done with the revenue. I know that it is odd to say this, but I see City crews working very hard at doing a good job. But what really disturbs me is, how senior administration at City hall works even harder to prevent them from succeeding. Snow removal this year was a prime example. The pride city crews typically took in making sure our streets were well kept, had obviously been sucked out of them buy budget restraints imposed to make administration look good. Maybe a performance bonus for the new boss at City hall was in order for making his budget reduction mandate.
The point I am trying to make here is, that if the Municipality had the foresight and the cahonies to prioritize their spending and reallocate funds within the budget to areas of importance, maybe the mayor would not have had to admit that a mistake was made. Or better yet, a nominal increase in the tax levy would be acceptable to the taxpayer if these efforts had been made. When I say reallocate funding, I do not mean take it from areas like the already embarrassingly small social grant budget, but prioritize what the city is going to do with new funding streams such as the Millions of dollars per year handed over from the casino and gaming complexes. Or what has been done with the funds from the Terasen (treason) gas deal. I have not seen it at work anywhere. Many times over, it is simpler to just go back to the well, rather than make changes within. Skip the trips to China and many of the other globe trotting exercises. Yes, promoting Prince George is important, but act as though the money is coming out of your chequebook Mr Mayor not mine!

There is no doubt that the City crews are doing a great job. But when funding is kept a a bare minimum for an operating budget and funds are used for the dreams at City hall like trips to China and brainstorming retreats it is impossible to maintaine the infrastuctruer repairs that are needed. These people need more then a brainstorming event they actually need a brain transplant.

As has been suggested what we need at City hall is a forensic audit and the Municipal Affairs to check their spending and the debt that the City now has. This would be an excellent time to do it. Should help greatly for the upcoming fall election.

Cheers
