Prince George, B.C. - When the dust had settled following last night's budget discussions, Prince George City Council had agreed to boost your municipal taxes by 4.36%.
That is the highest increase since 2001, when the hike was 4.35%. Mayor Colin Kinsley says when you go back to 2001, Prince George was in transition "We thought, my goodness we can't have a tax increase, so we attacked the accumulated surpluses which are supposed to be for a rainy day, We had two years where we had like a zero increase."
Kinsley lead that position, and says looking back it was a mistake "We should have had something, we should have had at least the cost of living in there, so we had to do some catch up. I think this 4.36% is just the reality of just some of the costs that are beyond our control."
Items like staff increases, and CCTV to check storm drainage or sewars were left on the table, while all the items that are linked to quality of life or public safety were given a green light. Does that mean some will see this as an election budget? "I don't hink it had anything to do with the election" says Mayor Kinsley " The beauty of this Council is the individual view on priorities, it took a bit of courage to go ahead with some of them when the general thoughts are we shouldn't do anything above CPI."
The Mayor says this budget is 'defensible' "That's not to say there won't be people who will be upset. The next trick will be setting of the classes of the tax rate and that will take place in the next coming weeks."
