Prince George, B.C. -   Prince George placed fourth in the  B.C. Hydro "Turn it Off" contest.

356 City residents signing up for the challenge.  BC Hydro results showed that if 86 more residential account holders signed up in Prince George, the City would have won the $20,000.00 prize.

“Fourth place is a credit to our community and I am confident that those who participated found the experience revealing in the amount of energy they use,” says Mayor Colin Kinsley.  “People that participate in these community challenges do make a difference and my thanks go to all who participated in the program.”
Had the City won, the $20,000 award would have contributed to Ice Oval lighting upgrades.
Nanaimo was the winner.

Interesting comments by the Mayor, however talk is cheap. I wonder if the Mayor and Councillors participated??? How many of the hundreds of City Staff, Police, Fireman, IPG, Airport Authority, etc: etc: participated.

I notice that while the City initiates all these different projects, when it comes to actual paricipation they are conspicuous by their absence.

Only in Prince George would fourth place be considered a credit to the community. 356 people signing on is a dismal failure in a city of 74000 people.

Personally I was for this, until the city decided the money was going to the ice oval. That whole process of how they magically sold the gravel and then the adult violence on the ice oval I have lost any desire to support the society.

You bet...we saved a whole bunch and now we are having our rates raised because of it...
go figure!
How about a turned off contest to see which city is the most turned off by their city mayors and councillors. I'd like to see that contest.
If 442 had signed up we would have won?

So we are about as apathetic as the rest of BC. That is the real story.

So why? Was this properly advertised? Was there a dollar incentive for those who participated? Sound to me that this was more an exercise in which city could get their citizens to participate more than any other. With a number that low, this most certainly was not about energy saving. Irt cost more in promoting the event than money saved through energy reduction.

If it was the thought that counted, it is obvious a ton more have to put their thinking caps on not just here but everywhere.

Is this the result of an earlier contest?
