City employees in general deserve a wee bit of a break today. It is high time that we recognized the true efforts put forward by most city employees. The people at the top of the heap are the ones who need an intravenous injection of common sense. The mayor, council, and senior administration are the blame for the mire we are in today. In the world of Business it would have been so long charlie for most of them 3 years ago. Most senior management at city hall have profesional credentials that dictate professional ethics and standards they must work under. However, they are under the direction of a a few bullyish nincompoops who have managed to get re-elected It is unfortunate that we have to tar them all with the same brush. So, those that do not want to be tarred and feathered should be standing up and making a lot of, and I mean a lot of noise. At least we as the taxpayer would hear it. Unfortunate for them though, poor leadership skills at the top will handle that noise just like Donald Trump. Your Fired!!
Oh well, In November the voters of PG get to take their own corretive actions. I can hardly wait!
Pet owners are in need of Veterinarians that will make house calls to euthanize
large animals that can't be transported to the clinic without a great deal of mental anguish and physical discomfort from the pet and their owners.People are willing to pay extra for this service, why can't or won't anyone step up to the plate and provide this service?
As far as I know PG vet will do this. We have had 3 animals (dogs) euthanized in the past. And yes it did coat extra.

The summer flood of 2007 killed about 75% of the red wing blackbird habitat on Fraser Lake. The red wing blackbird habitat can withstand normal pre-50’s high water but could not withstand the prolonged high water of 2007. This unprecedented long term high water was man made to prevent lower mainland spring flooding. The selling point of the dam to us was that the high water on the Nechako would be controlled. A weir on the Nautley River was constructed to artificially control the level of Fraser Lake. This worked quite well for many years but when the Nautley rapids are covered, serious flooding occurs on Fraser Lake and in Vanderhoof.

A spillway to the Pacific to maintain the Nautley rapids would alleviate these floods forever.

I have read that this winters flood in Prince George was blamed on higher than normal post 50’s flows that were necessary to keep the dam level static. Would this spillway benefit PG?

This spillway to the Pacific should not be confused with re-energising or the revival of KCP 11. This is a spillway that would be utilized when the Skins Lake spillway cannot dump extra water to maintain the Nautley rapids to mitigate natural disasters such as avalanches taking down power lines, high snow packs and now the mountain pine beetle epidemic.

I like what opionion250 is doing with the tax analysis. I'd like to see some analysis of revenue from other sources other than tax - gambling, teresen, RCMP fines, service fees (like fees at the pool), rental fees (cougars, civic centre).

For taxes to continue to climb at such a rate given significant new sources of revenue (gambling, teresen, traffic fines), there is an ugly leak somewhere.

Unfortunately that leak can't be found in a few short budget meetings.
I was so happy to hear that Robert Latimer was released on day parole. He spent far too much time in prison, and we all know it.
He also wants to re-open his case. Something I read from the origonal trial were comments from a Dr. in-regards to a 'new drug'. Robert insisted on knowing what drug the Dr. was referring too. He asked countless times, wrote letters once in prison questioning the 'new drug'. His question was shrugged off..un anwered for 7 years. Eventually he was told. They could not help him. Basically hoping this man would shut up and go away.
As a parent you would want to know if there was anything else to help your child in a situation like Roberts. He does deserve an answer. Personally I dont think there was a 'new drug' to help relieve Tracy's pain.
I think he did the right thing by ending his daughters suffering.
What I dont understand about this type of situation. People will let other people suffer to the point of cruelty. Lets put them on life support, lets medicate them to the point of unconciousness. Lets keep them alive..all while the persons quality of life is nothing more than a helpless lifeless form. Yet this is right in some way ?...this is what these people would want..?
To be perfectly honest we are kinder to our animals..when they get sick, old or become disabled. We usually do them the favor of euthanizing them. We feel better knowing they arent suffering. Why should our children-family, be any different.?

If Gordo's new 'carbon tax' is supposed to be 'revenue neutral'to the government when combined with other tax cuts, and simply a noble effort to force us to end our supposedly polluting ways, where's Gordo going to get the revenue from after we've done that?

So we all go into hock further to do whatever is necessary to 'go green', (to Banks who have now been relieved of the $ 120 million or so the previous capital tax on them brought in), the revenue take from the carbon tax falls as a result, and where does the ever greater, year by year government expenditure come from?
Well said, Justamom. Couldn't agree more. He shouldn't have served one day in prison, let alone seven years.
Call me weird but, I love Prince George. Now, that felt good.
Opinionated you are not weird! I love Prince George too! In fact I love living in British Columbia! Your right that did feel good...
I do agree that Robert Latimer should not be in prison, and never should have been.
But, I also have to wonder who we bless and who we blame?
We do have the right to euthanize our pets, but who among us has the right to make that decision when it is a human being?
Who will decide that and based on what?
Scary scenario!

I like Prince George in the summer time. I dislike it in the Winter. A very dark and depressing place ,however having said that I have lived here for over 60 years.
my little rant/question is this...how long does the canadian dollar have to be at par with the US greenback before we can buy books at the same price as the americans pay. I bought a paperback yesterday and it was $7.99 USA-$9.99 in Canada.
Thanks for the free-for-all friday Ben and the great site in general. Have a good weekend everyone!

If you are one of the people that like to drive around in residential neighborhoods with your stereo pounding out the tunes. Then this notice is for you.
If you don't stop doing this in my neighborhood I will get your plate number and turn you in, get your address and turn you in, or sit outside your residence and return the favour. You can do this the easy way or the hard way.
City bylaws prohibit excessive noise 24/7.
The reason for this is because so many of us are shift workers. While you are enjoying your tunes you are waking us up. I am not a happy camper when I get woke up, just because some braindead thoughtless person is driving around in their own little world pounding out the tunes.
Now, did you get the message?

I agree PG is a nice place to live. 5 minutes and I can be on a trail on my snowshoes or hiking boots.
PG is nice? Has anyone ever seen other places in the world? Pg is a dirty gritty rundown city...City hall needs to visit nice places and get ideas on how to run a city.
PG "as one called it" The getto of the north.
Drive downtown senic PG folks what a gem.
our alley is horrible! i had to give someone a tow in my truck, and i even have a hard time getting through in 4 low!!! This is not good! I called the city, and they said, "oh, ill just put that on the list" if you want to see how bad it is, try driving through the alley between Mcbride crescent and Laurie Crescent between Melvile and 7th....and to make it worse is that there is a daycare, and all the parents have to park in the alley, which means they have to be able to get through the alley!
I agree with you "getajob". The homeless in Vancouver are much better taken care of.

Your alley would not look anything like this by any chance, would it?

http://flickr.com/photos/morelcreamsauce/216485994
Or maybe it looks like this?????

ah ...... the joys of lanes in a winter city.

;-)

http://flickr.com/photos/grantmac/2127258146
PS ….. notice the no parking signs in that lane ……
"Has anyone ever seen other places in the world?"

I never travel …. Far too dangerous!
I see both sides, P.G. has many layers.
Are any parents out there familiar with Nexopia.com? If not you should be. If you sign up you can see what it's all about. In fact you can see what your kids are up too, if your smart enough. I am and I probably know more about some of your kids than you do. If your kids have internet access they probably are using Nexopia.
It's a place they can bully each other and people they don't know, they talk openly of their drug preferences and habits. The operators of the site state if you are under the age of 18 then you need parents permission to have an account with them. That doesn't matter because they will give anyone an account with or without parental permission. However if you contact them they will remove the account, but you have to be forceful.
You can discover many things about your kids such as what drugs they use and when and who they associate with. They all list their friends for all to see. They even post pictures of themselves and their friends drinking and doing drugs while driving around in your vehicles.
I may have some of your kids pictures with my daughter while they are doing these things. They even post what they think of you for the world to see. There friends get into it as well. Posting insults etc against their friends parents.

Have a nice day
Toronto’s main drag …… ah …. If only PG’s downtown looked like this……

With the warmer weather(yes here in PG we call this 'warmer' weather) I have noticed a lot of people out walking in the evening. *Please* people wear reflective gear! the roads are dark - if you wear dark clothing..like most do.. it is really hard to see you! ..and with headlights covered from the wet road conditions, it really is dangerous out there if you are not VISIBLE!
There.. THAT felt good.
I agree with Opinionated, Betterday, Howard_B_Stern & Palopu ( although winters can be a challenge sometimes) that PG is a good place to live & raise a family
a lot of people like getajob only want to run the city down my question is if it's so terrible why do we stay
I stay because I enjoy the city and most of the people
sum42guy2k maybe you should have made a proposal to the city budget to ensure all alleys a plowed as a priority and they could have increased our taxes anther few percentage points
the question that needs to be asked of both getajob & sum42guy2k and others that think this is the worst place to be, is what have you done to try to improve the city?

Way off topic BUT here goes:
We had an anti-bullying day this week when many school kids wore pink to support anti-bullying GOOD for them!
Now, when hockey players start wearing pink I will be able to enjoy hockey for the pure sport it is. It is a wonderful game spoiled by bullying tactics.
This should evoke a few responses!!!!!
I have to agree with the above, I've been all over the country, to lots of cities.

I love BC, I love PG. I don't love PG for the downtown core, I love PG for the outdoors and fresh mountain air. I love PG for the LACK of development. I don't have to drive 2 or 3 hours to get away from concrete.

I love PG for the people, the community. I love PG for the fact that when your vehicle breaks down, too many people stop to see if you need help.

I love PG for the fact that when you are leaving a store with your arms full, most people don't let the door slam in your face. Many people actually run for the door to open it in time for you.

I love PG for the fact that I can go into any store for a small item and strike up a conversation with anybody in the cashier's line, and before you know it, the cashiers are involved in the conversation too.

I love PG for the fact that people are real and down to earth, and I love PG for the fact that people still give a crap.
From Andyfreeze "We do have the right to euthanize our pets, but who among us has the right to make that decision when it is a human being?
Who will decide that and based on what?
Scary scenario" Andyfreeze that decision is made everyday in hospitals and nursing homes. That is why Latimer going to jail was a crime itself. For example someone is in a home lets say with alzheimer's and then developes or already has cancer. Do you treat the cancer,no. In most cases the cancer is left to run its course. Like I said these types of decisions are made everyday. So what is the difference between prolonging a persons eventual death with no quality of life or ending it more humanely.
For those knocking PG, it is spring in PG. How do I know its spring? The smell of dog s**t is in the air. Thank you PG dog owners.
From Andyfreeze:- "We do have the right to euthanize our pets, but who among us has the right to make that decision when it is a human being?
Who will decide that and based on what?"

It has to be decided on a case by case basis, I think, Andy. And like Seamutt has said, it is. In different ways. Every day.

Far from being "open season on the disabled" as some have characterized it, Mr. Latimer and his wife cared for their daughter enough to try to do everything humanly possible to make her tragic life somehow worth living.

They didn't abandon her, or institutionalise her, or disclaim her as their responsibility. They did as much or more than could ever have been expected of them. And when there was no longer any apparent hope left that they could ease her suffering, Mr. Latimer did the ultimate kindness any parent in a similar situation could do for their child.

In that circumstance he did, or at least should have, had a 'right' to end what was left of her life.

We cannot write a Law which could adequately cover situations like this. And it it one of the travesties of what we now call 'justice' that we have moved away from our British heritage of 'common law', where good old fashioned 'common sense' can guide us. For really, that's all that can guide anyone in cases like these. Too bad for Mr. Latimer so much of it has been missing. He should never have been convicted in the first place.
Driving around with your stereo and your ten thousand dollar speakers cranked up to the max is not only terribly annoying to others, but also stupid. How will you hear a siren so you'll know to pull over? Not only annoying and stupid, but also dangerous.

I think the people that bought North Nechako Elementry School for a dime and now make the ball fields, playground, and surrounding area no trespassing zones should have to pay taxes equivilent of any other residentual property of equivilent size. They may have been sold the land on a promise by our school district for next to nothing, but they should not also get away without paying their fair share of taxes.

To date not one single student (nearly four years later), just a mad man with a gun chasing people off the property (why is he running a grow op).

As its tax time... I think their tax classification needs further review. I was under the understanding that school ball fields and playgrounds were part of the neighbourhood for all to use as part of the parkland set aside for each neighbourhood? So why was the park sold with the building?
Owl to funny...
Big-Wayne I am not running pg down it is rundown!
I have spent a ton to make our place look good "street appeal"only to have next door rented out to drug dealers and lazy ass bums.
Heck our place is up 4 sale, send a buyer so we can view PG from our rearview mirror.
seamutt bet next door has bigger dog crap piles than your neighbours!
thereasonableman "Fresh air in PG" you are joking right?

A vision to clean up PG
Get some Bulldozers and flatten downtown, vla and most of the bowl and maybe it might look as good as Burns Lk.

I think it is sick that people support Robert Latimer and his crime of murder. I don't buy the excuss given for taking the young childs life.

People with cerybral palsy can think just as good as any of the rest of us, they just can't control their muscles to look normal like we do. Put yourself in that little girls mind as she realized her dad was about to snuff out her existance. Do you really think she just said good bye, or do you think she thought how nice it would be to feel the sun come up one more time rather then watch your dad snuff out your last moments? She was likely horrified without a venue to express it experiencing execution trapped in a body that doesn't work.

She may have looked to be suffering to most of us, as we would all be horrified at such an existance for ourselves, but that would have been all she knew... and if she wasn't going to get better, then maybe that was alright with the human who's life choice was never given consideration.

I have a neice not much better off then that little girl, with a similar future outlook (she will never walk either), it means a lot of work for her mom for the rest of her life, and I know that kind of thought would never cross her mind. It would be not only murder, but murder of a family member that loves and is loved.
Anyone who has an interest in the Ian Bush killing should read the article below. There are quite a few similarities, except the outcome so far.

I have a beef with all those that say Barack Obama is about progressive change. IMO he is a candidate of the banksters and the NWO elite that will take any position and spin it anyway that furthers his chances for more power. His voting record in favor of the banks and multinational corporations is horrendous.

The contribution list of Barack Obama speaks volumes. Starting with Rothschilds Goldman Sachs on down through the list...

I don't like Obama either. Americans are so desperate that they are buying his fake promices.
I agree Eagleone
"I think it is sick that people support Robert Latimer and his crime of murder. I don't buy the excuss given for taking the young childs life."

And some compare that to animals being killed! What kind of person compares animals to humans? That kid was murdered, plain and simple....I doubt she was smiling at that moment! Scary to think we have people that support this! Murder is murder put him back in prison and any others that commit this offence.
Well here it goes I may as well get my two cents worth in but it has a different theme.

Lets talk about climate change. The Federal Government hates the Kyoto accord. But Mr Campbell just loves it and has saddled us with a carbon tax. So lets have a look at what the experts tell us. The Royal Meteorlogical Society is one source and there is another lonely voice that comes from the University of British Columbia, Okanagon Campus from a guy by the name Dr Michael Pidwimy.

Currently there is a big effort to reduce carbon dioxide emmitions. It appears that it dosent matter how much we reduce our emmissions we will probably never win. The oceans produce far more carbon dioxide then we can.

Scientist have bored trees, ice, coral, rock and checked ocean bottom sediments and have established that climate Change has been taking place over thounds of years. It has also been estabilished that the earths orbit is not perfect and has a tendency to wobble which changes the distance relationship between the earth and the sun which effects the temperature on the earths surface.

As the earths temperature changes during the cycles of climate change that have taken place over thousnads of years so do the CO2 emmissions from our oceans run parallel with climate change.

David Suzuki will never tell us about the earths wobble and likes to tell us that we are respoinsible for climate change and the oil companies just love the wobble theory.

So remember that if we go along with with the present trend by our governments we could end up in the poor house. The choice is yours.
We love PG so much we're coming back
And for all the reasons thereasonableman mentioned.
Wow ammonra that is a nasty case. Sad to think about that second shot being fired.
I agree with reasonable man and it felt good to read it.
The people in Prince George are friendly, humorous, outgoing and helpful
Now if we could just clean up our air and heavy trucks running through Carney and Fifth and box trains rattling houses we would be perfect (?)
Can't beat the people though, they are the best.
Here is what out of towners think of PG

A little different but important to me! lol

A coordinated effort should be mandatory for CNC instructors---I just wrote 3 midterms, back to back! No break, no lunch--thats 4.5 hrs folks!

Instructors aren't allowed to work that long without a break...we students shouldn't have to either!!!!

So tonight, if u see dazed humans resembling zombies they probably just wrote exams!
(oh yes, I still have a pulse so I guess i survived! lol)
Is there any particular reason so many drivers don't stop at a well marked pedestrian crossing when there is a pedestrian in the crosswalk? Seriously, you take your life in your hands when you try to cross Victoria at 9th; I've lost count of the number of times I've stood halfway across Victoria pointing at the signs while Bubba in his F-250 just keeps rumbling on.
Wow getajob that link you posted made me laugh. People are mean!! lol..

A lot of people I went to school with did end up moving to Calgary for reasons of their own. My Grandpa lives in Calgary and loves it. Personally if I were to move it would mostly be because i'm so sick of the snow. People here in P.G. for the most part are very friendly. I love my neighbours and my childrens schools. Lots for kids to do if you know where to look. Imagination is a must if you don't know where to look. :)

This was my favorite line given by a poster on that site you gave:
"if youre a wimp youll get eaten alive"

Half true ;) ....lol
ya they are funny...pg has some great people...heck 42 years here i know everyone...it is just a dirty gritty city...and it is a shame when you hear"you live in the getto of the north"
wonder if city hall staff drive to work with their eyes open? nahhhh they must or they could not dodge the potholes...
I also think PG stinks .we will be moving this summer because of the air around here.I have copd and cannot even leave the house most days and with the Dog crap in the spring its imposable to breath and NO I DO NOT SMOKE
Just thought I should give those people who do not like Kamloops an equal chance ....

caution .... some loverly words on there ... but then again, it is Kamloops ....

http://www.bombingscience.com/graffitiforum/showthread.php?t=443&page=39

;-)

I could fine the same for Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, Chilliwack, etc. I am sure .... but I am going out tonight in PG and take in some of the culture downtown ....
Sadly a lot of the dog crap is along the sidewalks of the schools, and of course in the school yards. Its a bloody shame that the City cant enforce its bylaws.

Most dog owners carry a bag for picking up the doo doo, but only do so if someone is watching them, otherwise its left on the sidewalks.

Its these types of dog owners that really piss me off.
Hey Owl going downtown to take in the culture in Pg ..do you have a brown paper bag and a bottle of Royal Red?
And don't forget your quarters so you can pay for the smokes you bum
Nov.23/1980
Tracy Latimer born with severe cerebral palsy. This is not a genetic defect but is due to critical oxygen deprivation at birth. Total body involvement: spastic quadriplegic and 'general' or full brain damage. CP is not a stable condition but increasingly degenerative. Mental age capacity judged as 'set' about four-five months. All reports showed that the Latimers were loving and caring parents.

1980
At four months, her convulsions became continuous, preventing sleep. With drugs (Rivitrol), these seizures were reduced to five or six a day. The drugs suppress voluntary and involuntary muscle action and induce lethargy, further depressing vital functions already damaged by the disease: lungs and respiration, digestive system.

Unable to walk, talk, swallow food (throat had to be massaged to activate swallowing reflex), frequent vomiting, chronic respiratory problems. The ongoing irregular brain signals prompted muscle responses leading to severe muscle atrophy and tension.

1984
First surgery to release tension and pain caused by degenerating abductor muscles in groin area. Result: lessening of muscle tension in left leg; onset of unrestrained 'spring' in right leg and pain from this motion. Lost ability to kick legs/roll over. It was at this stage that the CP-induced degeneration of her body moved into a stage generating continuous pain. Pain became a serious problem.

Painkillers: could not go beyond regular Tylenol for more powerful painkillers would, in combination with her anti-seizure and anti-convulsant drugs - whose function is to suppress muscle movement - further suppress muscle reflexes and inhibit respiration. Giving her anything stronger than regular Tylenol would have rendered her comatose and requiring hospitalization with life support.

1984-1990
Scoliosis (curvature of spine) developed to 50 degrees off perpendicular. Hip dislocation. Problems with eating, vomiting as spine and vital organs compressed by pressure from scoliosis curvature. Seizures increase, leading to further muscle atrophy as muscles pulled away from the bone.

1990
Second surgery to relieve muscle tension, distribute strain and alleviate pressure on hips to deal with ongoing body degeneration and pain and potential hip dislocation. Pain killers: only regular Tylenol.

1992
Scoliosis continued resulting in curving spine to 75% off perpendicular affecting vital organs.
Third surgery of 8 hours to place two stainless steel rods on each side of her spine. The two steel L-shaped rods were tied with wires to her spine and the lower end of each 'L' was inserted into drilled holes in her pelvic bones. As with the second surgery, the results of this medical treatment relieved muscle compression and bone pressure only for a few months. Only pain relief - regular Tylenol.

Stage B: Physical Agony

1992
Pain, which became a matter of grave concern in 1984, became an increasingly acute concern after the third major surgery. The steel rods made her body rigid and there were few positions in which her body could rest; pressure sores; right hip partially dislocated. Great pain, problems sleeping, resting. Only pain relief-regular Tylenol.

Right hip became fully dislocated. In severe pain. More surgery would leave her in extreme pain as surgery could not simply put the hip back in place. X-rays showed that the ball joint in her hip was too badly eroded to permit successful reconstruction. One of the bolts in the pelvis protruded into the hip. Postoperative period would leave her in incredible pain according to doctors and recovery could take a year.

1993
By fall of this year it was obvious to family and doctors that she was in traumatic pain. Skin on left side breaking down. Unable to sleep or rest. Increasing loss of weight. Surgery discussed but doctors were certain that her body would continue to deteriorate and require more surgery and that the surgery would not end either her ongoing physical degeneration nor her pain. Essentially, surgical intervention could no longer keep pace with the rapid degeneration of her body and its concomitant pain as her bones and organs deteriorated.

The proposed fourth surgery would have involved sawing off the upper quarter of her right leg. The surgeon testified at the trial that the operation would be excruciatingly painful and pain would continue long afterwards. Additional surgeries would be required for the rest of Tracy's life as her body progressively degenerated. Medical testimony stated that current medical technology could neither stop this degeneration, nor, importantly, deal with the physical agony caused by her body's breakdown.

Her pain increased as her body degenerated. However, the only painkiller that could be used was regular Tylenol, a mild drug that gradually loses its effectiveness over use period. Any painkiller stronger than regular Tylenol would have rendered her comotose and in hospital on life support.

Tracy's parents faced a dilemma: Parents are expected to protect their children from harm. They were facing an imminent fourth operation which would put their daughter in further medically untreatable pain. Doctors expected more operations would be required as her body continued to degenerate.

ekk that sounds like they had it bad.

There still had to have been a better way then sticking her in the truck with it running choking on the tail pipe.

A humane parent would find a humane solution in collaboration with others; rather than taking the sole decision to end life in a crude way that I don't think was dignified. Maybe a holiday trip to India to see the beaches (then the doctors) or something would have had more dignity. But carbon monoxide poisoning in the rusted out pick-up... out in the back forty shows no respect for life... or his daughters emotions during her last moments.

Your timeline is over 13 years, so don't you think a more humane method of dealing with a difficult situation could have been figured out by that point? Or just rush her out back for an inhumane execution without any discussion?

Cerebral palsy is often a result of medical difficulties at birth (lack of oxygen), and not with the actual baby before birth takes place. As such maybe the medical society could be more responsive to the ongoing ramifications of these unfortunate medical incidents. In Latimers’ case there was a lack of will, or lack of communication, but neither were excuses for the option exercised.
