Prince George Airport Gets New High Tech Gear
By 250 News
Prince George, B.C.- Prince George Airport Authority has announced the installation of the new localizer equipment, as scheduled in the PGAA Runway Extension Project - has begun.
The Instrument Landing System (ILS) is a ground-based instrument approach system which provides precision guidance to an aircraft approaching a runway, using a combination of radio signals and high-intensity lighting arrays to enable a safe landing during Instrument meteorological conditions (IMC), such as low ceilings or reduced visibility due to fog, rain, or blowing snow.
The primary component of the ILS is the localizer, which provides lateral guidance in conjunction with vertical guidance provided by the glide path to landing aircraft.
Stieg Hoeg, Airport General Manager, explains “This is a critical step in the runway construction project that will lead to an increase in international air traffic”.
The PGAA has worked closely with Nav Canada, Airlines and contractors to bring about this upgrade and is confident this installation will be completed in a timely and efficient manner. Project timelines for this upgrade is expected to be 30 days.
The Prince George Airport Authority’s recent project – a runway extension to 11,400ft complete with center line lighting, dual ILS navigational systems and a dedicated deicing refueling pad for wide body aircraft will allow the PGAA to market the airport as a transpacific techstop alternative to International air carriers. This will also enable carriers to consider Prince George for international passenger services. The runway will be open in fall of 2008.
During this project the Prince George Airport will remain open and fully functional, the PGAA and our contractors have taken every measure to ensure any inconvenience to our customers have been mitigated.
