How do you privatize BC Hydro without privatizing it?

I suppose the first question is why would you want to and you have to be a Gordon Campbell or a Gordon Campbell acolyte to answer that. He and they aren’t talking so we have to make an educated guess. The only possibility that makes sense – if privatizing a money generating public utility ever makes sense - is philosophy - you simply don’t like public utilities because you don’t like public utilities. They’re sort of communist and, of course, like all publicly owned corporations, are badly run by bloated bureaucracies.

The three principal BC Publicly owned companies were that because of W.A.C. Bennett who purchased the Pacific Great Eastern Railway and rebranded it BC Rail; bought out Blackball Ferries and made it BC Ferries; and took over the BC Electric Railway Company, which became BC Hydro and also contained within it what was BC Gas which is now Terrasen Energy of Texas, pardner. Bennett, seen by the “left” as public enemy #1 for the 20 years he was in power is now their beloved icon whose revered name is mentioned in hushed whispers of near rapture.

Gordon Campbell wasn’t going to privatize BC Rail of course but he did and pretended that he had only given it a lease – a lease which if you went back as far as it does forward would take you back to the reign of Ethelred the Unready.

BC Ferries is a public company that has been privatized without ever leaving government control except that the government is now able to pretend that the bad things that happen, such as n ever-ending fare increases, are somehow not its fault.

So, back to the question – how to you privatize BC Hydro after you’ve promised cross your heart and hope to die that you won’t?

Simple – you bankrupt it by forcing it to pay unbelievably extravagant prices to private river rapists for power, thus adjust the bottom line so that pay-outs for electricity exceed revenues. Those who hold the bonds on BC Hydro then call their loans, take over the assets, run the existing dams at a nice profit leaving the company a shell through which those private power producers make extravagant profits while raping the environment.

Nonsense? Will never happen?

Just wait and see.

100% bang on!
The three utilities in north america that have the lowest priced power are BC Hydro, Manitoba Hydro and Quebec. They are all publicly owned. Granted they are mainly water powered which is the lowest cost. BC hydro's rates are going to shoot up paying for the very expensive contracts sighed with the Indepent Power Producers. This is going to be a hudge rip off just like carbon tax.
I agree 100% that a hidden agenda is in place to privatize for profits at the expense of the BC rate payer. When you open up your $4-500 a month gas bill just think what it will be like when BC Hydro is fully privatized and your pension check just doesn't cut it anymore....

You can always make a special donation to Gordon Campbell if you wish to speed up the process.
You would think the province would want to keep low cost power to woo heavy industry, and good paying jobs. Large scale power consumers may look to Manitoba and Quebec to build new facilities. I wish this government would give up ideology and use economics and common sense.
Somebody step up and give the people of this province someone to vote for.
After a century of progress and hope we are going back to the datk ages. God help us!

Cheers
Consider the source of the advice Campbell is getting. The Fraser institute has publicly stated that they think all of BC should be sold. They feel that companies will look after the property they own. Anyone this stupid should be dragged out in the street and shot in the back of the head, as far as I am concerned. Former British PM M. Thatcher is the root of this privatization drive and her she managed to rape the services that the people rely on. What it comes down to is, what do you think is more important Money in the hands of people who already have lots, or people. Do you think CN is doing a better job than BC Rail? Do you think that HMC is better than the Ministry of Highways? Perhaps it is time to cut the head off the beast. This Province has power centralized in the far corner. The NWT split in two. Perhaps we should consider the same.
On the money Rafe!
I wonder when the people of this province will start to see what is really happening in Victoria and say enough is enough?
One thing I can say about the Campbell government, they WILL be remembered, but unfortunately it will be for the wrong reasons!
Millions in tax revenues and stumpage will be lost to the forest sector crash here in B.C., and suddenly,we get a carbon tax??
Are we really that stupid?
The only thing green about the Gordon Campbell government is the color of the money that they worship!
These activities are why Paul Nettleton was removed from the BC Liberal caucus. You are quite correct that the Run of the Rivers power generators will cause a huge increase in Hydro fees for us. The Independent power producers (IPP's) have been trying to get a foothold since the 90's. Under Campbell, they got it. They want access to the transmission lines of BC Hydro and they are getting that as well. The only new power BC Hydro can build is Site C. Mark Jaccard is a huge supporter of the and he is one of the people who Campbell listens to concerning energy and our new tax on gas.
