Prince George, B.C. -  Prince George City Council will be taking another look at a possible  rezoning for the property on Queensway which is the current home to All Roads RV.  The recommendation is to deny the application.

There will be a public hearing on a proposal to   consolidate three lots on Westwood drive for the construction of a 34 unit apartment building, two 6 unit town houses and one 10 unit townhouse complex.

There will also be a public hearing requesting a change to allow the development of a wrecking yard on Hartway Drive.

Council will be asked to give first two readings to a bylaw that would rezone some property near the Airport to light industrial.  The first two readings would set the stage for a public hearing.

Also on the agenda, the Mayor will present his proposal for the Beijing trip and will ask Council to approve sending the City manager and one Councillor on the trip with him.

There is a request that City Hall agree to participate in Earth Hour on Saturday March 29th and turn off the lights to the trees on the front yard of City Hall.

Anyone want to lay bets on who the lucky councillor will be? I pic Zurowski - perfect buddies with the other two.
This is insane ! We consistently rank as having the worst air in Canada, just discovered we are in the top 5 dangerous places to live in Canada. Stop trying to attract people to this place. They can read just like we can. They don't want to come here.

Mayor and councilors please come to your senses and stop padding your airmiles and stay in PG and deal with our issues so that the Chinese will hear from the world, what a great place PG is to come to !.

You know is easier to retain the citizens you have at present then to attract new ones. So get to work on retaining us ! Fix the roads, come up with an actual plan for downtown ( not another consultants report ).
Turn off the lights to the trees for 1 hr? Let's lead by example and pull the plug on the energy waster. EVERY little bit helps.

My theory on why we are where we are at is based on the old saying, "the chickens have come home to roost"

Our air problems are a culmination of our greater community, both private and public, not realizing what has been going on for the past 25 years. I am one of the culprits and so are you if you have lived here that long. We have ignored our air quality for decades, yes decades and it has finally got our attention. Yet we continue to blame others.

As for being one of the top five, or should we say the "bottom five" I believe we are to a great degree a product of where we are. Ten hours from everywhere. That is what made us a City and a distribution centre for supplies and services for the North. Quite a unique situation.
Now we are in the unique position of also being a distribution centre, "hub" if you will for the region, but for a more profitable service.........drugs..

Where else can you have exclusive distribution rights to a product from one place where everyone has to drive to get it, with no competition for 8 to 10 hours drive.

That is why we have problems. Not City halls fault, not the RCMP`s fault. It is society slowly changing...not for the better unfortunately.

I regret that is my theory of why we are where we are now.

My only solution is still stuck in the old days, family first..........

I have a Question, what is this man doing in
China and turning the lights off for 1 Hour,
is this to pay for the Airline Tickets?
One last junket at the taxpayers expense. I hope the hosts have lots of beer!
metalman.
Stay home you glob trotter! What with todays gas prices I can hardly afford to to go to Hixon. Yet Kinsley can take our tax money and go for yet another holiday instead of putting that money into road repairs and other matters that really need some attention around the city. Total ignorance as far as I'm concerned.
Who will be going to council meeting tonight to protest the expence of another trip to China?

Come on you guys with all your ideas its time to step up to the plate.

Cheers
Runnerbase I don't know if I agree with your comment about the drugs. I used to live up in Fort St. John, where the economy is actually booming, lots of drugs, same isolation but that hasn't gotten them listed in the top 5 or bottom 5 as you put it, worst crime locations in Canada.

Interesting note about drugs in a community. In Fort St. John they have drug free zones around schools, that if a druggie is caught in that zone there is automatic heavier penalties for the crime.

When the same thing was attempted to be established here in PG, Crown Counsel was against it and therefore it was never done. So maybe the drug influence and mentality propagates down from very high levels here in PG.
Aha!!!! Hizzoner does have his travel agent on speed dial. I knew it. Maybe someone could plant a ticket agent at the airport and sneakily exchange the mayors round trip ticket for a one way ticket. Then he can work his way home. He should be home by November.
Will they give us the info on what the bids on the Cameron Street bridge came in at or will it be another big secret

"Yet Kinsley can take our tax money and go for yet another holiday instead of putting that money into road repairs and other matters that really need some attention around the city."

Just one example:

West Austin Road, South Kelly Road, Highland Drive, Croft Road - huge potholes, cracks and broken pavement...

Year after year it's the same - Highland Drive was last paved in 1981. 27 years later it is now falling apart, disintegrating.

Happy travels, guys!

Everyone is up in arms about this McLeans report about safest cities...... please do not forget that this is McLeans .... it is them interpresting reports for those who are willing to believe in their interpretations instead of doing their own walking through the jungle of statistics .....

Read this .. July 2007 .. BC information ....

http://www.pssg.gov.bc.ca/police_services/publications/crime_rates_burdens/MunCrimeRate2002-2006.pdf

This is the order of the cities with the highest criome rates at the top and the lowest at the bottom for 2006.

make sure you read the disclaimer on the site posted above before you believe the McLeans stats .... PG is not exactly low, but it is not as bad as made out by McLeans ......

Notice, Whistler is #2 which makes a lot of sense. If you want to run a burglary business, the best place to be is where there is something worthwhile stealing ..

Seems to me the only pavemewnt our mayor cares about are the ones on our airport runways. Tis kinda sad.
This infamous report in McLeans speaks about “safe” cities.

There are two types of safety – safety of the person and safety of the property.

Statscan has data which identifies the rate of all criminal code offences per 100,000 population as well as all violent criminal code offences.

When one looks specifically at violent crimes, and looks at the percentage of the total crimes that are violent crimes which compromise the safety of the person rather than the safety of property one finds the following:

In Nunavut, 21.5% of the total crimes committed are violent crimes.

Here is a breakdown for Canada from greatest to least:

nunavut 21.5%
NWT 16.3%
nwfld 14.5%
yukon 14.0%
nova scotia 13.6%
ontario 13.2%
sask 13.2%
new brunswick 12.8%
manitoba 12.6%
quebec 11.2%
alberta 10.5%
pei 9.7%
bc 9.5%

canada 11.8%

The figures for 2004 are shown here (these seem to be the latest available)

http://www.statcan.ca/english/freepub/82-221-XIE/2005002/tables/pdf/22141.pdf
I guess I forgot to draw the conclusion for those who are wondering.

The "safest" province with respect to the types of crimes committed, assuming that safety of the person is more important than safety of property, appears to be BC.
Yahoo, even by Owl's research we are in the top 10 of the worst places ! Or is that in the bottom 10. Either way doesn't bode well for PG to have such distinctions and our elected officials more interested in trying to entice a few dollars from China to here. Please stay here, spend the money here and get solving some of these issues Mr. Mayor.
One more way to present the stats for violent crimes ..... raw rate gives this order from worst to best .....

nunavut
NWT
yukon
sask
manitoba
bc
nova scotia
alberta
new brunswick
nwfld
pei
ontario
quebec

With BC, Nova Scotia, and Alberta being close together with respect to the rates ...
Lunar base .... BC has a lot of property crimes .... however it has the lowest ratio of violent crimes to property crimes in Canada ....

When it comes to violent crimes, it is 1.6 times as high as the lowest rate which is Quebec.

Saskatcehwan is 1.6 times as high as BC. The rate in NWT and Nunavut is about 6 times the rate in BC.

So, the wild west of Canada is actually the wild north of Canada.

;-)
He's going to China again ?
He should be fluent in the language by now....
BC is the California of Canada where all the losers and weirdos wind up. Me? I was born here, thanks.
