Northern Health is putting  service, success stories and financial reports into special packages for communities throughout the north.

The reports feature:

· Updates on local health services and improvements;
· NH’s 2004-2005 regional annual report and financial summary; and
· A guide to services in Northern communities along with listings of local contact numbers for health services such as smoking cessation, seniors’ care, immunizations, and more.

“These reports do a number of important things;” said NH Board Chair Jeff Burghardt. “They inform people about health services in their communities. They highlight local health successes in communities across Northern BC. They also showcase unique northern-based services and initiatives that Northern Health staff have worked very hard to put in place.”

Rather than producing a single annual report, NH produced nine separate community editions to better highlight local successes and improvements. The nine reports cover the following areas:
· Mackenzie and Prince George;
· Prince Rupert, Queen Charlotte Islands;
· Terrace, Kitimat, Stewart;
· Dease Lake, Hazelton, Houston, Smithers;
· Lakes District and Omineca;
· Quesnel;
· The Robson Valley;
· South Peace; and
· Fort Nelson and North Peace.

The Prince George / Mackenzaie version  features  photos of locals, introduces key players, and outlines some emergency numbers.

Overall, the report reveals Northern Health  ended it's fiscal year with a small surplus ($109,319.00) and is working its way through a budget of $482 million for the current fiscal year.  The financial priorities for the year clearly peg a "new northern cancer program" at the top of the list,  followed by increasing surgical case, recruitment, and a 20% increase (over provincial average) in acute care beds beacuse of the overall poorer health in northern B.C.

Hard copies of the report are available in all NH facilities, as well as on-line at  www.northernhealth.ca
