Lack of funds from the provincial government has forced the University of Northern British Columbia’s Board of Governors to approve a deficit budget for 2008-2009, says Board Chair Bill Lynch in a meeting Saturday morning.

University Administration planned to receive 1 million dollars more than announced from the provincial government in the budget they prepared, and now have until the next board meeting in June to come up with a revised budget. Administration will then announce what cuts will be needed to make up for the million dollar shortage.

No lack of funds fer the Olympics. Go figure, eh?
Unfortunately in Canada, university sports are usually the first to be cut since they cost the university money. Too bad. In the states, university sports is a multi million dollar money maker that benefits the whole university. Where did Canada fall short?

Population and geography are pretty much the reasons Canada's university athletics are not the industry that the State's are.

Besides, does the athlete who spends 4+ years playing sports at a US college really benefit if he doesn't make the big leagues and his pseudo-degree is worthless?
Well Zoo, I agree with your 2nd paragraph, but I think there are those out there who would disagree with your last paragraph - there are many ex college atheletes who have worthwhile degrees. I know there are some who do not, but these days they are a smarter breed and realize that they need something to fall back on - an education. In Canada I would scrutenize the colleges who hand out hockey scholorships to players who can't read or write.
I don't think Canadian universities should ever follow the example of US colleges or the myth that college sports generates millions in dollars of revenue for schools.

Even the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) who governs university sports in pooled 795 of their schools and found that the majority of them lose money hand over fist. The reason they keep losing money is they believe that ever year they have a chance to attend a bowl game or go to the final four, so they spend according to the best case scenario. Because not everyone gets to a bowl game, how many schools do you think lose money?

Even if a school gets $1 million dollars for attending a final four guess what? They have to share that million with others in their conference. It is also quite well known that these huge tourneys and bowl games are famous for athletic departments turning them into vacation junkets for the staff members and families which essentially takes care of any revenue generated.

When college sports runs a deficit, which the majority do, who pays for it? Thats right, other academic programs and taxpayers.

College sports costs colleges and universities and rarely do they ever generate extra revenue.

Besides, do you want to attend a university because it has good academic standing or because it has a winning sports team?
why is funding shorted to the university while the ministy of forests is doing a reno of their office. we want to educate peolpe who are losing jobs in the forest industry, getting new office furniture sure ain't the way to do it. money to education not furniture...especially when the forest indutry is in such stressed times
If we are buying a house, renting or buying a new vehicle, aren't we all invoking a deficit budget? The bank approved mine.
