Prince George, B.C. - The Board  for the University of Northern B.C. meets today to talk about what to do with the budget.

A provisional budget had been prepared as it was expected the funding letter from the Province would not be ready on time.

The budget was prepared in anticipation of similar or increased operational dollars. Such was not the case.

UNBC’s been advised it’s funding will be about $1 million dollars short of the expected amount as the Provincial Government moves towards targeting funds to programs which are in high demand such as trades training and health care programs.

That means there is no  increased funding for operational costs.

UNBC will have to decide  if programs and staff cuts will  have  to be made in order to  deliver a balanced budget.

I suppose that is a recognition that the university is some peoples choice of recreation. Without limits on the money oddball programs for entertainment sprout up and grow until the elite take the money for granted. Looks like the UNBC is to be a working university.
More like the Liberal Government screwed up again and is just now getting around to giving resources to the colleges to address the "looming trade shortage". There is only so many dollars available so it was taken away from all of the Universities in BC and given to the colleges.

The reason why I said looming trade shortage above, is I still can't believe that people think it is looming ! It hit about 5 years ago and hasn't gotten any better.

My daughter is just starting to look into what her future career will be and I am encouraging a trade of some sort, but still take University entrance courses at the same time.
Come on UNBC don't whine, do your bit for the 604 and olympics. I wonder if any Al Gore fans will loose funding?
Usually a university does not offer a program if there is no demand for it...sounds like more layoffs. With almost every university complaining about shortfalls in budgets, sounds like this "targeted funding" needs to find better aim. Probably just targeted to make sure the Canada Line is built on time....although it may be targeted for those magic $100 rebate cheques we are getting in June???
I don't see anything wrong with making adjustments to a budget when conditions have changed. The Provincial coffers are not a bottomless pit. Sometimes it's necessary to redirect funding to where it is more of a priority. Like trades for example. Investing into trades is money well spent in my view. Chester
Just more fallout from governments who have decimated the provincial coffers by giving away massive tax breaks to corporations like the banks recently. The choice becomes either make up the shortfalls through taxing the public more (which endangers the possibility of being re-elected) or cutting off services. The more financial give aways the less money left in the budget. Now that the economy is going down, the simply is not enough money left to maintain needed social services such as health-care and education. We are about to be in big trouble directly attributable to the ideology of the B.C. Liberals and the other neo-liberals like Harper. Truly tough days ahead due to greed and poor planing.
Hey,it costs big bucks to host the Olympics!
Aren't they more important than education?
It has to come from somewhere and god forbid that should be anywhere on the lower mainland!
I warned of this situation a year ago, but nobody in UNBC listened.

UNBC's budget is cut because UNBC under Dr Cozzetto failed to deliver the promises that it has given to the government.

UNBC promised in 2006 that for the next 5 years, UNBC enrollment will increase by around 6% each year. Guess what: UNBC's estimated undergraduate enrollment for this year will be 6% lower than previous year. This translates to further 6% reduction in money coming from student tuition in addition to 1,000,000$ shorthanded from government. So I won't be surprised that the actual UNBC total deficit be as much as 2,000,000$ by the end of this year!!

Cozzetto is responsible for this failure by removing deans with excellent performance from their position and keeping deans (like Dr William B. McGill) and chairs who have terrible performance in UNBC and who have been targeting professors with good performance.

The question is: why Cozzetto punishes good performance and rewards bad performance in UNBC? It looks like gang politics in UNBC. Sorry Don, but the government does not reward BAD PERFORMANCE and gang politics.

Add to it the overgrowing number of discrimination cases in UNBC which have been ignored for the past 5 years by the UNBC faculty association and Cozzetto and his predecessor Jego.

But Cozzetto got an F mark for his mis-management in UNBC. He has 2 options now: 1) to resign like his provost Dr Howard Brunt 2) or to start quickly replacing deans and chairs with bad performance and record of discrimination, so that UNBC's overall performance increases.

If he keeps people like Dr McGill in his UNBC team, then I assure you that UNBC will be closed in 4 years and Prince George should prepare for UNBC's funeral.
