Assessment Appeal Process Wraps Up

Prince George, B.C – The initial appeal process on property assessments has concluded, and some changes have been made.
In the Prince George Assessment Region, there were 999 appeals filed. Not all were followed through as 59 were withdrawn.
Of the remaining appeals, 531 resulted in a decrease. “There are lots of reasons for a decrease in assessment” says Gerhard Brosch, Assessor for the Northern Region of B.C. Assessment. “There may have been a rental unit which was damaged by a renter, that would decrease the value, or maybe the property owner demolished a garage and we had no knowledge of that. There are a number of reasons why an assessment could be reduced.”
The changes mean the assessment roll value for Prince George has been reduced by less than 1/3 of 1%.
As predicted, there were more appeals this year than last. With 735 appeals launched last year, the number filed this year marks a 22% increase.
“People should have started receiving the decisions from the Review Panel this week” says Brosch who says if people still disagree with the decision, there is another avenue “The can sub it an appeal to the Property Assessment Appeal Board, and they have until April 30th to launch that appeal.” More information can be found at www.assessmentappeal.bc.ca
