The resignation of John Les is just one more knife in the death by small cuts the Campbell government is inflicting on itself. Mr. Les is being investigated over land deals in which he was personally involved that went before the City Council of Chilliwack when he was mayor and afterwards. As the story leaks out it would seem to be the usual melding of shady grey elements with a gap in hard evidence that so often accompanies land deals.
Now Mr. Les was the top cop, being in charge of the Province’s police. He must, then, be like Caesar’s wife, above suspicion. There is suspicion, so out he goes
Who does Mr. Campbell bring in to take over?
The man who, when in charge of aquaculture warned fish farmers when investigators were coming and gave the same farmers back the money they had been fined for misdeeds they committed! Mr. Les must leave because he is under suspicion to be replaced by a man who was forced to admit wrongdoing!
This is the same Van Dongen who, in the teeth of overwhelming evidence, denied that Atlantic salmon escapees were getting into our wild rivers and consistently denied that migrating wild salmon were literally being eaten alive by sea lice from fish farms in the migration paths.
This Les affair tells us something about the Gordon Campbell caucus – if the best the Premier can find to replace Mr. Les is Van Dongen, their talent is very thin indeed.

Far too many skeletons in Van Dongens closet to ever be seen as an honest politician, particularly in the top cop's job!
But,Campbell is arrogant, and thinks he is bulletproof, and while that MAY be grudgingly true to a certian extent on the lower mainland,it will be the north that hands the Liberals their tune-up.
The Liberal's biggest liability is actually Gordon Campbell, and I have a feeling that they may be about to find that out in the next provincial election.
I would like to think that they can only dump on those who elected them for so long, before they push back.
