Here is something interesting which affects our part of the world ....

Greenpeace and the Forest Products Assciation actually appears to be in agreement on this. Will wonders ever cease?

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/080410/national/logging_carbon_bomb

here is what it states in part:

"Research is starting to show that the boreal forest is tipping from being a overall carbon sink to an overall carbon source," Gerguson said.

Greenpeace isn't suggesting Canada halt all logging of the boreal forest, she said. The group wants the untouched parts of the forest kept that way.

The head of the Forest Products Association of Canada agrees.

Avrim Lazar says the association, which represents wood, pulp and paper producers, has agreed there should be no logging in the untouched parts of the forest without adequate planning.
"Nero" multimedia software company.
Over a period of time I have purchased both Nero 7 and Nero 8. Although I have sent emails and a fax requesting customer service, they continue to refuse to reply. I understand others have received the same treatment. Has anyone visiting this site had this same problem with Nero?
Kudos to the business owner in PG who installed the 'Rat Trap'. Rather that sitting on his/her laurels and getting robbed over and over they took action to stop the cycle.

If you want a different result you have to change the way you play the game.
The owner has had those same door locks down at the Liter for a long time. They work well because the rats don't learn.
I hear fuel prices are coming down... just kidding.
seems that global warming has all of the concerned intelectuals inside burning up their carbon credits and to think they are one of the endangered species, why they should be out hand feeding the starving squirrels who have been displaced by the bug killed forests. i'm not kidding !
I feel like going to deforrest a huge ungodly amount of prestine untouched back country complete with all the enemenities such as stream rivers deer moose and fish. Just clear cut it all. Then dig it up and turn it into a gravel pit:)
Very funny Yama!!! hahahaha!
Actually,it will...just before it runs up to $1.50 a liter!

If there's any 'agreement' there, Owl, it's on TWO different things.

Greenpeace doesn't want ANY of the "untouched" parts of the boreal forest to be logged. Ever. And that's MOST of it.

Since MOST of it hasn't ever been logged. They want it to be off limits. Permanently. A vast, unpopulated 'wilderness area'. They think it should continue to rot and burn "untouched" by the hand of man.

It's the same mentality that won't even allow salvage logging in parts of the US National forests that've been ravaged by wildfire.

While FPA of C wants to have it available for logging "with adequate planning", (whatever that means, which is probably far from what most people think it means.)

So there's your choices. And in practice neither one will do the boreal forest, nor most who depend on it, longterm, very much good.

There is an article on CBC news site about how badly the Baldy Hughes rehab is doing.
Over 30 left or booted, and one stole a truck to go to PG on drug binge!
And then the manager? quit too.
Sounds like they need some professional help.
I notice Campbell and company just gave Vancouver another 10 million big ones to beautify their streets.
You would think they could get involved in something like Baldy Hughes instead worring about how the city looks for the Olympics and wasting more of our tax dollars on the lower mainland!
Hey...maybe they could come up with some bucks for potholes in PG?
Andyfreeze, the pull that some of those drugs have on the addicts is incredibly strong. I have seen some incredible things happen when one of them is on a quest to get another fix. Almost nothing can stand in their way, they become very crafty, even creative, in their journey of self destruction. It does not surprise me that they are experiencing the turnover you describe, and the stolen truck? well that is par for the course.

Which brings me back to my constant rant;
'THE DRUG PROBLEM'
Why does our justice system continue to let the drug problem grow? Why not clamp down on the filth who distribute the misery? What can we as citizens do to help?
The police are virtually powerless, I heard the other day that in Vancouver, at the Main st. cop shop, drug deals are going down every day, right across the street, in broad daylight!
metalman.

-Sory if this is a conflict with Op..250, But its a good read.
The loss of our forests due to pine beetle kill has made a big impact on wildlife in our area. I have noticed this first hand. I have been feeding the birds and squirrels in my yard for nearly 30 years and have seen the changes. This year, flocks of redpols and pine siskins have emptied the feeders on a regular basis. I started putting out suet for the woodpeckers and have seen a huge increase in the numbers .... all three types of woodpeckers have visited the feeders, the downy, the hairy and the pileated woodpecker have quickly emptied the suet.
And as for the squirrels, their numbers have increased. Normally, we would only see one family in the area with the male seen the most foraging for food. Last year, we counted at least seven at one time and they all got along. No fighting over the peanuts, either. What does that tell you about the state of our forests and the effects it has on the wildlife?
I couldn't agree more metalman!
As far as I'm concerned, dealers should be charged with attempted murder or at the very least, criminal negligence causing death!
Every time they sell this crap to some poor addict, that's just what they are doing.
And if the buyers are not addicts, they will make them one.
But the mystery remains..WHY won't our justice system hit them as hard as they possibly can?
Political bulls**t!
Truly mind boggeling!
Maybe it's true that the drug culture and the money it generates has actually become a big part of our economy?
Maybe drug money really does flow up hill?
But, I really do think the provincial government needs to get in there and do something for Baldy Hughes.
The tools are all there, they just need the expertise to pull it all together, and it would be a shame to see it tank and fail at this stage of the game.
"Dealer man's not dealing drugs because people are doing them. It's so they will!" -John Trudell

I'm with Andy and Metalman on this one. Drug dealers are the biggest scum on the earth. Our laws do a great job at protecting the addicts and we have great resources for those who want to clean themselves up (and bless those who are honestly trying to get clean).

However, those who deal and supply need to be treated with much more severity and to the fullest extent of the law. I'm generally a mamby pamy liberal, but drugs are destroying communities and in a larger sense this country. The costs we all pay as citizens are huge, while those who deal death to our kids seem to do as they please.

We need to equip our law enforcement with the tools to get this scum off our streets and we need a justice system that has the teeth to keep them in prison.
Another reason we need to put an end to open net pen salmon farms on the coast of BC, heck I will go as far as to say the world.
They are devestating our natural environment.
STOP BUYING FARMED SALMON

I was thrilled to see the pothole repair truck down on Domano the other day.
Two days later the holes they repaired were twice as bad as before they were fixed.
I just saw a report on TV about manual pothole repair in another Canadian city:

The crew used the same hot mix pothole patcher truck but instead of just shoveling the mix into the hole and jumping on it with their feet and whacking it with the backside of a shovel (like they do in PG) there they actually tamped it down with a manual tamper, consisting of a long wooden handle with a one-foot square cast heavy iron flat plate attached at the bottom!

This method appeared to be very effective in compressing the still flexible mix and leveling it properly with the adjacent road surface.

I respectfully suggest that just whacking it with a shovel may lead to a repair that does not last as long as if it was done properly.

But, as an untrained layman I am probably lacking in education about these matters.

The City probably conducted many expensive studies in the past before it adopted the *jump on it & whack it* method as the only one that makes sense in Prince George.

Too bad I can't post a picture here, otherwise I would post one showing this basic, reliable and time tested tamping tool in action!

Post a link
Andy, Baldy Hughes is not going to tank and fail because a few addicts ran away. Many addicts have been through recovery/detox many times and either failed or relapsed.

Also, many addicts surface for detox every time the cops shut down the local crack shacks. They don't really want to get clean, they need somewhere to crash because their supply has been cut.

What makes Baldy Hughes a great concept, and will ultimately be it's success, is that:

1) it is long term treatment
2) it is far removed from the drug element and temptation is not right outside your door

These two factors are going to immensely help people who are serious about beating the addiction.

The rest of them will probably avoid going there, now that they know how troublesome it is to get back to town for drugs if they want to relapse. They were not ready, or not serious enough.
Another free-for-all beef: Waste Management trucks (the big green and yellow ones) think that the allowable speed in a 50km/h zone is 75km/h or more. Again: where there is no speed limit sign posting a higher or lower limit the standard speed limit throughout the city is 50km/h.
The more I think about the proposed carbon tax, the madder I get. What the hell our these people thinking? I have often argued with people that the north's perceived unequal treatment from Victoria is just whining. No more. This the most blatant kick when we are down I have ever seen. It is massivly disproportionate for the north. We need to stop this BS. At the end of the day it won't make a rats ass differnce to the climate.
I would like to send out a "beef" to the gentleman in the black toyota tundra, with a canopy one it, that passed me in the Peden Hill School, school zone on Wednesday!! at 2:15pm

to the gentleman again "YOU PASSED ME IN A SCHOOL ZONE!!! into oncoming traffic!!!

and to the gentleman as well, who stated he has driven transport his whole life!! and stated there would be more accidents in PG if there were more drivers like me!!
once again!! "YOU PASSED ME IN A SCHOOL ZONE!!! speed limit 30km/hr

whew!! that feels better again!!
Diplomat .... someone is going to hve to teach you to use google. You are right on with the compaction method of course. I have never seen one of those crews long enough to watch them at work, but the shovel think simply does not provide enough force.

http://www.brewerproducts.com/main/product.php?rec=52
"At the end of the day it won't make a rats ass differnce to the climate."

Probably quite right .....

The rational reason for a carbon tax is that we are going to be running low on carbon in the form we are using it in to provide us with energy. A total retooling needs to happen and it will not happen overnight. This is a drop in the bucket for an incentive to get us going more seriously on that path. It needs to go to $2 ... $2.50 .... $3.00/litre to actually change people's ways form being energy gluttons ot being prudent users of relatively finite resources.

The average commute to get to work and even to get to a favourite shopping centres is about 10 times the commute distance to work in a smaller community like PG. So, I am not quite sure why we are worse off than Vancouver.

The rest of the travel that some are talking about here is work related travel. There are workers down there who drive for their work and drive just us much or more than we do here.
Anastasia ... if that fellow had had your beef while on the road, he probably could not have passed you that quickly ....

;-)
Mr. Owl and Mr. Diplomat... by your leave, my lords .... with respect, you are both missing the finer points of that hideous, mundane practice which you refer to as "pothole repair".

Our esteemed technicians in this pursuit prefer to utilize the ancient, honorable art of "soft membrane particle control"...(SMPC)... a secret passed from one generation to another... a secret, mental process so subtle, yet so powerful, that some who would have abused the gift are now victims of their own terrible dungeon of despair !!

There are no printed records of SMPC, however, as an escaped, former instructor, I can simplify the basic process for you...

Wait... someone's at the door... back in a moment.....................

hmm time to go stock up the wood fireplace. Hey anyone know where I can purchase some carbon credits?
I hope we dont have to backdate our credits?
Thanks to everyone who wants to show me how to Google! One of these days I will master it! :-)

Owl: "I have never seen one of those crews long enough to watch them at work, but the shovel think simply does not provide enough force."

I had the pleasure of watching them (twice) in the last few days! Yes, it is indeed the *stomp-on-it-and-whack-it-with-the-shovel* method that they use!

I couldn't figure out right away how to disable the flash on my digital camera and did not want to disturb them while they were doing their job (they were indeed working hard - but not with a tamping tool) but next time I will be prepared for the event as it unravels before my very eyes!

I know they will be back shortly! That is for sure!

RRabbitt, I just heard a knock on my door!

Oh, my goodness, it's the pothole inquisition!
ahhhhh ... RRrabbitt may be the wise one who appears to have been close to Grande PoohBahs of the ancient Moorish Science Temples and has achieved the wisdom of those with higher mental processes .....

sure hope that the call to the door did not result in a drive by silencing ...

++smile++
There is a drug problem, but, lets talk about its cause not its symptom. You can't teach a kid that everytime they feel tired, irritable, sick, upset, hurt, depressed, over active, etc, etc, that they are in need of a drug and then wonder why they turn into addicts. Reap what you sew, the dealers may change, but, the thought process stays the same. I feel ______, I must need _______. Until this changes, nothing changes.
Who would have thought that a Conservative, supposedly free enterprise government would nix a deal by a US company to purchase a division of MDA.

Interesting turns. I might have to support them yet if they keep on that tactic for growing the Canadian economy. The again, maybe it isn;t growing it at all in these days of globalization.

I agree with Travism, it is more a demand side problem rather than a supply side problem. Probably more a peer pressure thing from other users rather than from those wanting to push their products. Don't think much push is needed.

An interesting cure might be on its way ..... more drugs ...LOL...

"The average commute to get to work and even to get to a favourite shopping centres is about 10 times the commute distance to work in a smaller community like PG. So, I am not quite sure why we are worse off than Vancouver"

We aren't, but why let common sense get in the way of a good "they are screwing the North" rant, LOL :)

Ok,Friday is almost over.
Last guy out, turn off the lights and put the cat out.
I did that once and the cat came back with only one eye ...... :-(
Man, another blown tire in one of the 100,000 prince George Potholes.
I'd like to mention that there should be better enforcement in the displaying of events posters in the city. There is one particular (and controversial) event of which I support that is particularly bad for this. The posters get plastered absolutely everywhere, and even though ones for an event this month have now been up for over a week, it's not uncommon to see posters from the previous even still hanging.
My axle's shot, tires blown and sore arse...that's why I wheeled in soo late.

;)

the asphalt tampers are way too heavy for a city worker!! Anything heavier than a coffee cup, is too heavy!! Need another solution!!! How about, re-pave and maintain!!! Keyword being "maintain"

Maybe Kinsley can find a pothole repair method in China!!
