Crowd mills at Friday's rally outside the School District 57 Offices

A crowd, estimated at about 180 people, set up pickets in front of the School District 57 offices on Friday to protest the government’s inaction in the teacher’s dispute.

The teachers from School District 57 were joined in the demonstration by other unions who were present to offer their support to the teacher’s efforts to get bargaining underway.

Prince George District  Teacher’s Association President Karen Mackay says the teachers are solid in their stand to remain off the job until the government gets into serious bargaining regardless of what penalties are imposed.

BC Federation of Labor President Jim Sinclair says a general strike has been considered.

If there are 1200 teachers in SD57 why is it there are only a couple of hundred people (including other unions) at this rally?
Also, have any of you seen a strike where the pickets are only up from 8 - 4 and there are none on weekends and holidays?
Does it matter why? The schools are closed, teachers are not crossing the picket line, nor are members of other unions, and people who could came out to support them in a rally. Deprecate it all you want, and that is all still true. Their actions speak a lot louder than your critical words.
Hmm... could it be that they don't get paid in the summer and picketing is not meant to only be a statement of disatisfaction? Picketing is withdrawing service in order to force dialogue where there is none - hard to withdraw service that isn't required in the summer. Would you go to work all day and then picket all night? Where would that get you?

It's silly to blame teachers for not picketing in the summer or at night. Picket lines stay up for 24 hours in places where the offices/businesses do 24 hour business, such as Telus. What would teachers on the picket line at midnight prove? Only that they are willing to compromise their safety when they really don't need to. It would accomplish nothing but to show people, who don't really care what the issue is because they are only prepared to comment and not investigate, that they can stay up late and do other things than prep and mark.
Perhaps there were fewer people because the rally was held at 3:30? A lot of supporters work until 4:00 or 5:00, and a lot of afternoon shift workers are already on the job at 3:30. I don't really think the turnout at this rally is an indication of the amount of support for the teachers.
Jim Sinclair? Good grief the President of BC is going to TEACH us a lesson, to TEACH us some respect and TEACH us who is boss in this bloody province. He-he-he-haw-ha. Please, somebody put some bubble gum on his seat.
