We are #4 as crime capitals go. But then what would one expect in a city where they dont even know how to fix something so simple as a pot hole in a street.

We hire a new manager and where does he come from, the boonies. I guess we dont want somone that has the smarts to run a city we want someone that we can control to lead us down the path of of stupidity.

Cheers
Thg City probably thinks its a police problem. Clean up duty after the fact .... after the conditions which make one place worse than another are are not recognized at an early stage and something done about it.

One will likely not get to zero crime, but one could get to being number 43 on that list.

BTW, we are #43 when it comes to violent crimes. We are #4 based on some sort of survey that McLeans did. I am still not sure what information they compiled in it and what weighting they gave certain types of info to arrive at their rating.
It would be more interesting if the reader knew what time this incident happened. 2AM would say a lot more. Doncha think?
Let's put it in perspective...

What would any of us be doing in a back alley at 1st and Dominion late Saturday night, hanging around with people who are carrying knives ?

Not doing anything to make them angry ?
We are not much worse than any where else. Two people were stabbed in a nightclub in Kelowna over night. It happens everywhere.
But Kelowna is not #4.

Cheers
The MacLeans article. Methodology: Macleans obtained annual crime data from Stats Can for municipal police services with the 100 largest populations in the nation. Using 2006 rates per 100,000 population for 6 crimes--homicide, sexual assault, aggravated assault, vehciel theft, robbery plus breaking and entering---Macleans calculated the percentage difference from the national rate for each of the 6 crimes. In consultation with StatsCan, we gave each crime equal weights and standardized the rates to obtain an overall score that measured each area's percentage difference from the national rate. Verbatim from the magazine.
With the cost of housing in Kelowna and the amount of drugs it will soon be #1.
For those who doubt the amount of crime in this city, start reading a newspaper once in awhile!! Listen to the news, the morning after!!! But please, quit pretending it isn't happening, because it is!! This is one bad ass city for it's size!!!
Some advice, stay out of the hood and downtown and you'll be fine.
Better yet... Clean up the hood and the downtown. Get after the drugs pushing biker gangs and other gangs and put them where they belong. In prison... Enact laws that allow for this and use those laws... For every biker or other gang that threatens politicians or judges with reprisal then let say add another 10 - 15 years to the sentence or even better capital punishment. Why waist electricity form our hydro damns for the "comfy chair" when a bullet to the back of the head would be sufficient. These folks are the scum of society so lets try and clean them up. Maybe we might even be successful in saving some school kids from getting involved with drugs.
That area is close to Prince George original beginnings. Throughout it's history when the Mac was in that neighborhood and people would crawl from bar to bar I am sure there were loads of stabbings and murders in the area. This event probly represents 10 or 15 stabbings which are ignored by the media.

It is now home to PG's vagrants and lost souls. There are several street shelters in the vicinity. I have seen people shooting "H" on the street in this area in broad daylight. Acts of prostitution can be observed at anytime of the day or night. The needle exchange is near by too. A stabbing does not surprise me, things like that are common in that lifestyle. The time of day was not mentioned, things like this happen at any given time.

Now we have the west coast junkies coming in to our pristine treatment center at Baldy Hughes... Not many at present, however when it proves successfull, it will be full. Their west coast dealers are coming to PG to wait for their customers to get out. There is plenty of market for them to sell while they wait.

Good effort, Very commendable. That junk has to be stopped by everyone. I did not see anything that said PG residents in the same boat had the same opportunity to clean up...we need to get a few of our junkies off of our street too b4 we end up in 20 years like Vancouver is now. Or are we not as deserving? lol, oh well. Hopefully I am around in 20 years to see what happens after today.

Turning a blind eye is not what we should do. Society's problem is all of our problem and by catching media attention, perhaps the right people see and decide to action properly. It happened in Vancouver. Thanks Ben for posting this story, we need some focus on local "minor" events like this. Need more like it from all areas (like the hood AKA VLA)

Why is nobody associating the new nightclub with this incident (in the National Hotel)?

They held their grand opening on Sat night and I guarantee this was a result of that. Another quality establishment for us!
just for clarification that victim was my brother and he was chased to the alley by 3men that held him down and stabbed him...maybe you should rethink what some of you had posted
Somebody taped a note on his back that said "Stab Me" ?
Random attack or what? The plot thickens.
Wow, nice to know that if I end up stabbed downtown the general public will assume I was up to no good.

People are attacked out of the blue, unprovoked and robbed, beaten for no apparent reason - just for fun, so how can you people make such assumptions that this man was involved in any sort of shady activity?

I have been downtown and while walking to my car right across the street from the establishment I was visiting, was chased into an alley - when you are scared to death and trying to get away, you run, not necessarily thinking about where you are running to. Thankfully a passerby scared the freaks away, but lord knows what could have happened to us.
It is disappointing to read the conclusions people jumpt to without any facts whatsoever.
i am with you singlemom. There seem to be a LOT of people in PG and on this forum who like to blame the vicitms. It makes them feel safe i guess. It doesnt matter what time of night he got stabbed guys. Do you really want your life or that of your kids to hang on a string based on where they happen to be in the middle of the night? I am sick of the police commenting on whether the victim was known to police or not. I hate it when they report that the victim isnt cooperating. These are cop outs designed to placate the public when they should be trying to rile us up.
