Prince George, B.C. - The College of New Caledonia will make its final decisions today on how it plans to handle its $1.1 million dollar budget deficit.

While there  has been a suggestion CNC may  opt for a deficit budget (which  is not allowed by the Ministry of Advanced Education) the Faculty Association plans on being on hand to show the members of the College Board that the  proposed cutbacks are not acceptable.

On the chopping block:

  • Forestry Resource Technology Diploma,
  • Business the Next Generation
  • Job Education training
  • Techniques for Access reaching goals employment training
  • Open Doors, (Disability program)
  • Northern Outdoor Recreation and Tourism
  • Intramural Sports as well as  cuts to the  University Credit disciplines of
  • Criminology
  • English
  • Geography
  • History

The College says the cuts will result in savings of $1.1 million in the 2008/’09 school year and a further $800,000 in the ‘09/10 budget year.

14 instructors, 7 operational staff and 2 administrative employees have been given notice their jobs will be cut.  Two instructors have indicated they will take early retirement to enable two of their colleagues with less seniority to remain employed.  The impact on the part time staff has not been finalized, but there will also be jobs lost among the part timers.

The main funding issue is that while the Province is correct in saying it is spending more on college programs, those dollars are targeted to specific programs such as trades and health programs.  There is nothing to cover the general costs of operating the college, in fact, the general funding has been reduced by 2.6%.  Those general costs include building maintenance and student support.

Did you know that CNC heats between the double doors of the main entrance? Those 2 heaters don't serve any other function....but apparently that's okay cause it's on boilers.

Did you know that all Administrators got pay hikes? They are facing shortfall yet hire extras so the board is sitting pretty sweet right now.

Did you know that I won't be able to take all my courses in September because they will only offer them on evenings and Saturdays of all the blatant stupidity!! No days! What the f am I supposed to do?

No such thing as full time at College come September because it will all be geared to part time students.

Sure look after themselves well...FATCATS!
YUP....public funds abused! It was a ram it. I sure feel for the faculty. Well, I said my piece anyhow. I wanted to respect the process but their process did not allow for the public to speak. Yes they reluctantly indulged until I made alternate suggestions of how to fund. Then I was told to not interrupt. Hmm. VERY FRUSTRATING. Not a democratic process at all.
Democratic process? Was there an election? Did anyone vote? No democracy that I can see. I hope they didn't use the word democracy. Or was that concept based on a presumption? Once upon a time I used to be a member of one of the largest unions in Canada. Funny thing was every other word out of their mouths was democracy. Looking back I didn't even get to vote for my union president. My "delegate" did. How's that fer democracy?
