SMITHERS, BC. - Teck Cominco is the largest producer of Indium in the world, the metal used in the production of flat panel TV's "We in the mining industry must make sure that we show the public the importance of the mining industry in our daily lives.
Those were the comments of M. Colin Joudrie,(shown at right) Director of Business evaluations for Teck Cominco Ltd.
Teck Cominco has established a re -cycling smelter in Trail which is able to extract many of the minerals used in the components of TV's, wireless phones and other electronic appliances.
The establishment of the facility says Joudrie is not a feel good story for the company;"It was built with the intention that it would not lose money for our company. It has to make economic sense."
Joudrie was one of the panel speakers at the 2008 Minerals North Conference underway in Smithers.
Joudrie says it is important that industry, government, 1st Nations and others involved, learn something from the decision in the Kemess mine issue.
"It is important that in the future we reflect back on that decision to see what we have learned from it.We also must make a point of informing the public about what mining in BC is all about and that is one of the most important issues facing our industry."
The plan to expand the Kemess mine was rejected because of environmental impact to Duncan (Amazay) Lake and the concerns of First Nations about cultural connections with the area.
