Puppy Mill Busted In Vanderhoof

Vanderhoof, B.C. - Seventeen small dogs have been seized by BC SPCA Special Constable Debbie Goodine in what is believed to be a puppy mill in Vanderhoof.
A puppy mill is a facility that breeds dogs for the sole purpose of a profit.
The Constable received a call from a concerned citizen. Upon investigation Goodine found several infractions of the PCA Act including poor ventilation, inadequate sanitation and overcrowding of the dogs. There was also no visible means of enrichment.
The officer also indicated there was no indication there had been any veterinary care provided for the animals.Goodine’s first concern is to relieve the animals from distress by educating the owners. Many recommendations were made but after several unannounced visits it was deemed in the best interest of the dogs to remove them from the facility.
“Many of the dogs had serious untreated ear infections, dental issues, abscesses and tape worms,” says Goodine. “There were also two-week-old puppies who were hypothermic and not able to nurse adequately.”
The investigation continues and charges of animal cruelty are pending. With the strengthening of the new amendments to the PCA Act those found guilty will find more severe sentencing than what had been available in the past.
