SMITHERS,B.C. -     Mike Brandson, speaking at the 2008 Minerals North Conference in Smithers says his company is awaiting the full report on the study of the extension of Hydro Electric power along highway 37 north, along with Galore Creek as to  what their plans are.

We know, said Brandson,  that Galore Creek is having another look at the project and that is important in any discussion we may undertake. Kevin Krueger, Minister of State for Mines says he is confident that the Galore Creek mine will go ahead.

There has been a concentrated effort at the conference to focus attention at the highway 37 power extension.

Hats are everywhere promoting the line, as well, Mayors and other dignitaries are to meet with Premier Campbell following his speech to the conference to discuss in part the power line extension.

When asked about the possible extension of the power line along highway 37 north Krueger said,” “Our government was fully committed to construction of the Northwest Transmission Line, in partnership with industry, when we announced it in the fall of 2007, and we are just as committed today.  The question is one of timing; my colleague the Honorable Richard Neufeld, Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, is certain that upon resumption of construction of a major mine, we can complete the Transmission line in time for the electricity to be connected to the completed mine.  Lines are not normally built until customers are in place for the electricity.  Although people raise the example of WAC Bennett’s massive construction, Mr. Bennett had a 30 year contract with the USA when he committed to construction.  We look forward to new mine developments along Highway 37, and will deliver the electricity when they are ready for it.”

Build the damn line then stand back and watch what happens!
They WILL come and the economic benefits won't just come from mining.
And while they are at it,they should also upgrade the road right through to the Yukon border and then from McKenzie down the back road to Fort St.James and on to Prince Rupert!
It would become one of the most breath taking and remote circle tours in B.C.!
The project would have the potential of being the most viable and exciting economic boosters B.C. has seen in many years!
And if the hydro line is already there, who knows what kind of business it will attract?
It isn't just about Galore Creek and mining in general.
The forgotten hamlet of Stewart would become a real town again!
A beer in Hyder anyone?
maybe if the parliament buildings were in prince george gordy campbell wouldn't be our exhalted leader & we could redirect some power to the top half of this bottom heavy province that likes to bleed us northerners of the true wealth we are entitled to , in fair balanced treatment of all services no question we are being ripped off as usual. come on liberals show some real leadership or i will be voting differently next election.jd

Anyox ring any bells? This may well be the reason the BC government is so reticent to move forward on this investment. Or look at WAC Bennet's Dease Lake Rail extension. Somethings are ahead of their time.

As a fellow Northerner I support this extension. I just wish that other players would come to the table.
