It had all the ear-markings of disaster...

A Prince George woman woke up to the smell of smoke inside her townhouse in the Carriage Lane Estates on East Central Street just after six this morning.  Assistant Fire Chief Henry Goats says she quickly grabbed her three children and ran outside, just moments before flames erupted and swept through the unit.

Goats says 17 fire fighters from three stations were called out and there were initial concerns the complex of row houses could be at risk, as the blaze was burning in the middle unit, but he says crews had the flames contained within 10 minutes.

A crowd of residents, many wrapped in blankets, gathered on the lawn to watch the fire fighters at work, as they used a fan to then ventilate the suite.  Josh Wilson and Jamie Ware live in the adjacent building and say it was the acrid-smelling smoke that woke them up as well.

Assistant Chief Goats believes the blaze broke out in a wall in the townhouse, but says fire investigators will be examining the scene to determine an exact cost.  He pegs the damage at roughly 80-thousand dollars, but says the family is extremely lucky to have escaped with their lives.
