Beetle Killed Trees Contributing to Climate Change

With the pine beetle having killed forest four times the size of Vancouver Island, carbon emissions are expected
Prince George, B.C. – According to the journal “Nature” new research indicates there is more to worry about with the mountain pine beetle killed trees than loss of value.
A study by Canadian Forest Service scientist Werner Kurz, indicates the dead trees are emitting plenty of carbon dioxide.
Kurz says the dead trees are putting carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere as they decay.
The amount is staggering; according to Kurtz’s research over the next two decades, the beetle killed trees will emit nearly a billion tonnes of carbon dioxide. That amount is five times the amount emitted annually in Canada by the transportation sector.
There are only two things that can be done to offset the impact of the dead trees says Kurz , reforestation and harvesting the dead trees for bio fuel or other uses.
