Just one word. Wow!!
Hey look at the view from here honey.
WHAM
Perhaps a lack of attention
The Taylor bridge has this nasty metal grate surface that even when perfectly dry is very awkward and difficult to drive on. This can easily result in you jumping lanes and in the case of motorcycles you get flipped down.
Yes, I have driven over that bridge deck on the best of days and even then you can feel your tires deviating on the surface. If there is a sheet of ice on the grateing, watch out.
It also makes a loud noise you can't help but hear, and produces a vibration you can't help but feel. The combination of these two factors usually calls your attention to the task of driving.

Are we sure this wasn't a suicide ?

The bridge is speed restricted and it looks like that vehicle had some speed on.
"As a result of a head on collision around 1:30 this afternoon, one of the vehicles crashed through the guard rails of the Taylor Bridge....."

Doesnt sound like a suicide.
I travel across that bridge on a regular basis as a trucker running up to Whitehorse. I can tell you that in a big rig, the side to side jogging that the metal deck surface of the bridge produces in ones vehicle is much more pronounced. The posted speed is 70 km/h, but I find myself going 60 km/h just to keep my rig on my side of the bridge. A metal deck is not required on this bridge and a concrete one would be much safer. I guess a metal deck is cheaper to maintain? This is indeed a sad tragedy. I was on the Ft St John side of the accident and was only delayed 1.5 hrs.

This is a very poor section of the Alaska Highway. One good rain storm and south Taylor hill will come down in a mud slide, blocking the road. Can't a better route be built considering all the traffic it must handle?
In any event, very tragic.
Has anyone heard an update on this?
I've several different stories, but I don't know which are facts.
Was it a head-on or rear-end? How many people died and which vehicles were they in?
To mr/mrs "lostfaith" someone DIED as a result of this, are you proud of you're little comment? I hope you are embarrassed.

To everyone else, there was only one fatality. He was 29. He was someone's brother, uncle, son, nephew, and friend. He was in the pickup truck at the bottom. The other person in the truck survived, but is in hospital, his condition isn't known right now.

The person driving the van was treated and released. And no one knows the details on exactly what happened or who was at fault yet.
Just read on the CBC web site that it was actually a rear end situation. Both vehicles where going in the same direction when one hit the other from behind, resulting in both loosing control.
Good for you peaches, i was thinking similiar thoughts when i read this:

Hey look at the view from here honey.
WHAM
Perhaps a lack of attention

Shameful! What a terrifying and tragic accident.
Mr Peaches what ever you found offensive in my comment is beyond me. Did you read into my comment that the person who died deserved it or what exactly is your problem? In case you don't know this.
It is a fact, that most vehicle crashes are caused by people that are not paying attention to what the hell they are doing while driving two tons of steel down the highway. You know the ones, (perhaps you are one of the following)Putting on makeup,
yapping on phone, feeding the kids, dangerous passing, Or how about this one PEACHY.... Sight seeing tourists driving across Taylor bridge and the wife says to her husband " Hey look at the view from here honey". Honey being the idiot that he is looks at the beautiful scenery and crosses the centerline into oncoming traffic. "WHAM"
"Perhaps a lack of attention"
IMO there was nothing in my comment that should offend anyone including robichal.
There are a lot of people that are legally allowed to drive in this country that shouldn't be. While you are in control of two tons of steel hurtling down the highway peoples lives are in your hands. Pay bloody attention and people won't be killed or injured at the rate they are these days. My comment was not meant in any way to be what ever it is you think it is. Get a life

I also have driven across this bridge dozens of times over the years in cars and 18 wheelers and it is only a problem when you are not paying attention. Same as anything else in life that has any danger involved in it. IF YOU DON'T PAY ATTENTION YOU WILL KILL OR HURT SOMEONE. If you don't know how to pay attention then stay in your home. I'm sick of people that don't know how to pay attention, endangering my life out there.
Perhaps you are correct lostfaith, they were chatting, not paying attention. Your choice of words however, was inappropriate and disrespectful. Sorry, can't help how I interpret things.
I don't get it Robichal, please explain how you interpreted my words. You surely see some other meaning than I can imagine. I was simply stating what I thought could have caused the crash, I see no other way to interpret the words I used.
Should I have said....perhaps someone in one of the vehicles said to the driver...
"Hey look at the view from here honey". Suddenly "Wham" a crash occured.
This crash could have been caused by "perhaps a lack of attention" ?

the person who died in this crash, that was my brother.

Our sincerest condolences to the family in their time of loss. Very sad.
lostfaith: You are right that many accidents are caused by those who are not paying attention and many more accidents are caused by drunk drivers. If everyone had gotten up and walked away from this, your comment would not be offensive in any way shape or form. But, there are very many people who were touched by the life of the man that was killed, including myself. I'm personally offended that it SEEMS as though you're making light of something tragic. I'm offended for his family and all his friends that are going to see this and your comment and perhaps see it as I did.
Sorry for your loss Rayannalee
Making light of this? You are joking right? Ok I understand your overreacting to my comment if you are involved in this in some way, these things cloud peoples thinking patterns. However you need to rethink your attack on me for my comments, your being absolutely rediculous. You are making it sound like my comments are applauding this persons death. I will ask again...Exactly what do you think I meant with my comments that have offended you and what are you reading into them that I and others do not see? Please tell me a story. You are overreacting to a simple comment.
Honestly, this isn't doing anyone any good. I'm sorry if I made you feel that I'm attacking you, or that you're applauding someone's death. My opinion is that your comment was insensitive is all. I'm entitled to mine as you're entitled to yours. But why would my opinion matter to you as this is, after all, the internet, and just a blog, and only for opinions.
The only word you (lostfaith) missed to make you seem completely insensitive is the word "splat". You have completely missed our point and this is pointless...
And you both have over reacted
