Smithers, B.C. -  The Northern Lights Wildlife Society  needs help.

The Society is the only one in B.C. that takes in wildlife, you may already know that it is the  home of Helena, a cougar rescued  following the Kelowna  wildfires.

The Northern Lights Wildlife Society needs a new vehicle.  The existing set of wheels has 400 thousand kms on the odometer, and is no longer reliable.  The family wheels are just as worn, in fact, owner-operator Angelika Langen recently had to borrow a vehicle from a neighbour to   head to the Queen Charlottes to look after an owl program it operates there.

“The vehicle just isn’t reliable, and we will soon be called upon to pick up new animals, and to release two grizzly cubs”. The cubs are the first in the Grizzly Bear Rehabilitation Pilot Project at the shelter.  The shelter is home to  those two grizzly cubs,  one kermode bear,  11 black bears,  a number of moose and deer and of course, Helena the cougar.

It costs about $60,000 to run the Northern Lights Wildlife compound every year.  People are good to make cash donations says Langen, but the costs of fuel and the need for a newer vehicle, are putting pressure on them.  “We really need a 4 wheel drive, extended cab pickup or an SUV with inside cargo space” says Langen,   “Otherwise, we just don’t know how we will pick up or release the animals we are called upon to look after.”

Anyone who can help the shelter is encouraged to call the Langens, they can be reached at the Northern Lights Wildlife Shelter by phone at 250 – 847-5101 or by email info@wildlifeshelter.com
