Bad Drivers Target of May Campaign

Prince George, B.C.-A new month has started and with it, a new campaign targeted at speeders and aggressive drivers.

ICBC and the RCMP are teaming up in an $800,000 speed and high-risk driving awareness campaign that will run to the end of the month.

You can expect to see more speed enforcement, and volunteer Speed Watch deployments in high-crash locations.

Speeding is one of the biggest factors in high-risk driving crashes. Approximately 5,200 people were injured in 8,200 speed-related crash incidents in 2006.

The RCMP say they will also be keeping a close watch on motorcyclists as there has been a doubling of fatal crashes involving motorcycles in the past 10 years.

There are probably at least ten times more bikes on the road now as there was then.
Another money grab for the Olympics. Did you know that if you get a speeding out of Province that Campbell wants his share? The Liberals will fine you for any ticket you get out of province.
All PG drivers know how to run a yellow light, but none know how to merge.

Too many empty traffic light intersections around this town anyway.
thank you YamadooPolCat!!! No one does know how to merge - PEOPLE, IT IS NOT A YIELD SIGN!!!!!! And to all of you out there who won't let people in who know how to merge - MOVE OVER OR SLOW DOWN!!!!!! This is when my road rage is at it's worst/best is when idiots don't know how to merge - it is NOT rocket science, it is the opposite of a yield - just try to remember that!!!!
Does tailgating at 80km/h within 3 meters of a vehicle improve the gas mileage of the tailgater really THAT much?

Although a recent ICBC survey showed that tailgating is seen by motorists as the single most annoying and unsafe highly aggressive driving infraction! The RCMP does not give this insane coercive bullying tactic the attention it deserves.

RCMP: Revenue Collectors Mit Pistols
There are definitely a lot of bad drivers out there. The cops never seem to notice the people blowing by me as I cruise along at 5 or 10 K above the posted limit.
YDPC you are so right.
metalman.
Diplomat if you have a idiot tailgating you teach him a little lesson. When he gets real close hit your brakes let him smack into you. If he rear ends you its automatically his fault! I don't think you'd want to do it at full speed but just enough to mess things up, he will have to pay to repair you vehicle and possibly have to copensate you. I promise you that he will probably never tailgate again!
if they're tailgating its probably because you are the slow vehicle driving in the left hand lane...and REEVUS if you wanna teach someone a lesson, causing an accident isnt the best course of action
Tailgating works on the NASCAR track. So here, it only stands to reason. Right?
drivers in the left lane driving slow or at the same exact speed as the vehicle on the right side drive me mad. I don't however, tailgate. It is not only dangerous but also plain rude and inconsiderate - yep... bullying. I admit, I have thought about slamming on the brakes - but any potential for inujury is just not worth it.

Merge vs Yield - another thing that drives me nuts - I just don't understand what the heck people are thinking. Didn't they have to pass a drivers test?
Can a person drive over the speed limit in the left lane legally?
Raise the goddamn speed limits already. This ain't 1973.
Perhaps we ought to read the little article up there again. Doesnt it say speeding is the biggest factor in high risk crash areas? How will increasing the speed limit fix anything? Not that anyone drives the limit anyway.
If, indeed traffic fines are sucha big revenue source for the govt why is it that there is so little traffic enforcement these days? When i was younger you could count on getting a ticket if you sped ion the way down to vancouver. You didnt even have to go far above the limit. I drive WAY faster than i used to and i havent had a ticket in over a decade, even though i put more miles in than most people.
I would gladly put a few dollars in the kitty if it would increase enforcement regarding dangerous driving (tailgating in particular). Of course that could be my age talking. ..Hey you kids! Get off my lawn!
caran - I made my remark partly in response to the "left lane" comments above but mainly because I believe they will, in all likelyhood, spend the May long weekend cruising the passing lanes & straight stretchs South & East of town in order to maximize the number of infractions & thereby "prove" the success of the campaign & ensure another $800,000 cash infusion next year.
text messaging and cell phones are going to overtake speeding as the main cause of accidents in no time...
Speed does'nt kill, dumb S$#!s drivers kill. They are probably text messaging or surfing up a bluray whypodd thingie instead of watching the road and other stupids like themselves. And there is probably an 'N' on the vehicle that just blew by you like you were'nt even moving.
Hell, I was once badly injured when I got out of my car to see what was wrong, I had just been passed like the proverbial "standing still" turns out I was doing sixty miles an hour, funniest thing you ever saw.
metalman.
You got that right Yama. By the way, why is the speed limit only 60k down south past the north scales on the Hart? A four lane road like that should handle at least 70 or 80kmh right from the bridge north. That seems to be the natural flow of traffic anyway.

I do recall years ago when twinning the bridge was complete, Kinsley was going to meet with highways and the RCMP to have the speed limit raised a bit. But today still 60 as it was with the one bridge.
when they post the speed limit at 60, everybody does 70!! You post it at 70, they all do 80!! Lets face it, PG has the worst, most self centered drivers anywhere!! If they had to go through my driving test, 80% would be off the road!! I see so much in the 10 hours a day I am on the road in town. I could show the RCMP places to make money, other than Tim Horton's!! There are intersections in this city, where stop signs and yield signs are a total waste of metal and paint!! If they were to implement my plan, the daily revenue would be incredible, cost of doughnuts would be way down!!
They say that the intersection of Domano and 16 West is one of the most dangerous in Northern BC for accidents. Let's start the speeding blitz right there. Daily, people are blowing through yellow lights at 90 kph as they head into town. Logging and chip trucks amoung the worst. Merging just before that intersection is a joke also. Not only do drivers not know how to merge but once they do they go straight across two lanes of traffic so they can turn left onto Tyner Blvd. Go get em.
Reevus, I would never slam on the brakes to stop some idiot from tailgating me! Road rage can lead to broken glass and even murder!

wavoes, I always keep to the speed limit and the right lane on a four lane highway - still, I am being tailgated there too!

If there is no one in the left lane I often signal, move over, slow down, let the tailgater in the right hand lane go ahead and then move back again to where I wished to drive in the first place.

It works and does wonders for one's blood pressure!

Tailgating should be prosecuted as a form of coercion as it is an attempt by the driver doing it to force or coerce the other driver to do something he/she doesn't want to do, namely go faster than the speed limit, break the law and run the risk of getting fined.

The RCMP does NOT seem to think that it is a big deal, because while one is being obviously tailgated a RCMP cruiser can come down the road in the opposite direction and NOT take any notice but just speed on merrily as if there was no problem!

If there are laws they ought to be enforced because otherwise the whole thing is just a joke and a free-for-all!

Harbinger: "Can a person drive over the speed limit in the left lane legally?"

Excellent question! Years ago I got an answer from a cop which basically was *yes, if after passing the slower vehicle the one doing the passing immediately moves into the right hand lane and after that keeps to the speed limit.*

It was a vague, unsure reply and I would never put it to the test and get caught speeding that way.

It is probably a gray area thing, like giving (or NOT giving) a ticket for going through an amber light which JUST turned amber.

That is called *disobeying an amber light* and can be a wonderful source of easy revenue for the RCMP if applied in an arbitrary fashion without common sense and ignoring the laws of physics which dictate that a vehicle needs a certain distance to make a full stop from a certain speed.

That full stop with smoking tires may result in placing a vehicle in the middle of an intersection blocking traffic...just to make sure that one does not *disobey an amber light.*

The RCMP is always right.

Just a thought, but are the police not supposed to be preventing and solving crime.
How is it that they spend three quarters of their time patrolling predominately law abiding citizens for minor traffic infractions?
Why is it so important to have every one comply with an arbitrary speed.
Why can the police not devout more resources to criminal enterprise and organized crime than to ensuring that drivers support our government through fines?
Oh silly me, it is because their real job is to hard so they focus on the stuff they can do and that is drive a fossil fueled vehicle around all day and night patrolling for traffic infractions.
