Prince George- A thief made good his escape today with the owner of a $1500 dollar bike chasing him on foot. The owner came out of the Public Library within a block of the police station to find his bike being stolen. He tried to catch the thief but was out run. Police were called in but lost the track of the man in his 20's after he lost them in the industrial park down town.

The thief is described as a Caucasian male with a goatee and a tattoo of two faded tears on his left cheek bone.

Police say there has been an increase in thefts of expensive bikes in recent weeks. Thieves they say then chop up the bikes and sell the pieces.

Expensive thefts? I thought the bikes were expensive. lol
Well that bike will be traded in on crack or something else. Catch hom, cut his foot off, hard to ride a bike with no foot in the future
Maybe if owners took some responsibility and secured their bikes less of them would be stolen.
If that had been done in this case, my empathy goes out to the owner of the stolen bike.

We all need to take action on our own to protect all of our belongings, not just bikes.
It takes less than 60 seconds to steal a car so a bike, lawn mower, BBQ will not take even that long.

Remember, hardware stores could sell bolt cutters to the bad guy as well as the good guy.
BCRacer, what more can people do? Even if someone locks their bike up, bad guys can still steal it if they really want to. it's just like anti-theft devices on a car, they don't always work.
Taking the seat off is a deterent.

Clever disguise! Fake glue-on goatee, fake glue-on tattoo, white make-up...he'll never get caught! Are we sure he was not a fake glue-on male?

:-)
Monty, you are absolutely correct. In some cases no matter what you do , they still set it. But so many don't do anything to help themselves and then complain. It was to them my comments were directed. Sometimes even , we, who do it right get sloppy and then pay the price.

Yes indeed Wiley, seat removal is an extra inconvenience, as is removal of the back wheel.
BC Racer says: "maybe if owners took some responsibilty" Hey Man, I am weary of living under the tyranny that scum sucking thieves and crack heads have us in. We have to be on our guard constantly lest one of the lowlife steal something from us.
If the city powers don't see that this is affecting business downtown, then they must have their collective heads up where the sun does not shine and I don't mean Vancouver. I personally am very careful where I park downtown; in the day time. If I can avoid it, I do not park there in the evenings. It is just not worth the risk.

Taking the seat off is good. I can tell you, that if I see someone riding a bike at night without a seat, that bike is getting seized...I don't care how much the rider gripes...then its up to them to prove to me that they own it...if not then the bike goes to auction unless there are some traceable serial numbers on it and the police can get it back to the owner.
Imorg, you did not say what would become of the thief if you seized a seatless bike at night, was that intentional? I guess it is only too obvious that hesheit would get
a slap on the wrist and released.
