Prince George, B.C. – 600 inside and outside workers with the City of Prince George will be advised to reject the last offer from the City.

The membership of CUPE locals 399 and 1048 will put the package to a vote on the 20th.

CUPE Local 399 President Dennis Marleau says the offer falls short "The City of Prince George has stated they believe they are offering a fair compensation package, however we believe this offer falls short in the final year of the agreement and leaves us behind similar agreements throughout the Province.

The inside and outside workers have been without a contract since the end of December.

Remember City Workers - you can not get a raise - the City needs the money and lots of it to send the Mayor and his group to China for 8 more trips - one being "how to fix the potholes in PG"!!
Hang in there - the cost of everything goes up but the worker's wages....
Maybe if the city "workers" actually worked, they get the compensation they want. If they're just going to stand around breast-feeding their shovels they don't deserve the package they've already got.
Typical redneck comment Zoo.
'Typical redneck comment Zoo.'

But SO accurate.

You can always spot the City projects by the mob of zombies staring blankly down a hole.

Until coffee-time, when they get in their white zombie-mobiles and zip to Tim Hortons.
You notice city vehicles do not have a phone numbers on them, saying hows my driving. And even if they did you could not keep up to them to read it. And if did catch up them it's at Tim Horton's and you would know which vehicle to report. The quality of there work in the the city speaks for itself.
This is only the begining.
Everything is going up, and it is only natural that people will be looking for raises.
Whether or not they will get very much remains to be seen, but in any event, there could be a lot of unrest in the labour market on the horizon!
Good luck with that!
By the appearance of our street - no sand or dust has been swept yet or picked up - I assumed they were on strike already for at least the last 2-3 weeks.

So there is still hope? Great news. May they get everything they deserve plus a bonus of some kind!
twenty years ago, i would say that zoo's comment may have been accurate. But the older I get. the more I appreciate the work they have to do. I am in free enterprise, I do see a lot of waste in the ways they do things, but equally, they are efficient in other ways.

It is not necessarily the wages that concerns me, it is the number of employees. The number of employees should be a percentage of the population. This way,the tax increase should be in check at all times.
"The number of employees should be a percentage of the population."

Using the percentage approach:

If there is not enough of a workload some workers are going to be standing around (or sitting) idle while getting paid for it.

If there is too much of a workload the work is not going to get done in time or properly.

Presently, when the population increases so does the workload and more people must be hired to get the work done.

Presently, when the population decreases so will the workload decrease and some people will see their jobs being eliminated.

A pretty fair arrangement, I would say.

"By the appearance of our street - no sand or dust has been swept yet or picked up".

My understanding city crews have swept the downtown core and are working on the Hart now. So to say, they must be on strike now, only leads me to think that you must live on a gravel road. Don't know if anyone has told you this, but they don't sweep gravel roads.

Don't know what kind of wages they are looking for, but with the price of gas and increases to taxes, etc., I would think it is only reasonable to expect some sort of wage increase.

As long as the province is governed by unions then you will just have to get used to no work and high pay for same.
Big Shooter: "So to say, they must be on strike now, only leads me to think that you must live on a gravel road. Don't know if anyone has told you this, but they don't sweep gravel roads."

Great shot, Shooter!

Well, last time I looked (a minute ago) it was all paved like always, with a bike lane on both sides, streetlights, curbs, a sidewalk...nope, definitely NOT a gravel road and it is a bus route as well!

Hmmm....now what?
Looks like the city workers at Ft St John should be getting a huge raise, to match the huge city tax increases.
Given the state of the province as a whole i think they should be happy with the wages and take a 5% roll back untill times get better.

The 5% should be given to their union brothers and sisters that are not working due to the forest industry being down!

Where is the pratice of the ole union pac" United we stand?"

Ya i know every man for himself now ..

When this city gets some work done then i would say give em a raise but they gotta earn it!

Heres an offer you don't hear every day;
Work or be fired! That is my final offer.
But you can't say that out loud in a union environment. Really, more of the work the city guys and gals do, and this goes for the school boards too, should be contracted out. You get a firm price, and the contractor does not get paid until/unless the work gets done. Much more efficient, and cost effective. Unions inhibit productivity. Having said that, there are plenty of unscrupulus employers out there who would not treat people fairly, so I guess we can only keep on complaining. Thank you.

Getajob says "Given the state of the province as a whole i think they should be happy with the wages and take a 5% roll back untill times get better."

Yeah right! And maybe the Civil, Provincial and Federal elected officials can do the same. But NO! The B.C. Liberals gave themselves a big raise. ICBC has millions in their non profit organization, give themselves big raises and raise our rates. BC Ferry execs gave themselves a big raise and raise rates for passage. (Another privatization scheme by the Liberals) The Federal government has billions of our tax dollars in their bank account. Terasen gas is going up, Hydro is going up. We pay Kinsley and crew to take holidays to China. In the meantime the cost of EVERYTHING is going up, so lets all take a roll back and go into the poor house to support the big wigs in government and others in privatized corporations . That's exactly what the B.C. Liberals want to see the rich get richer, the poor poorer and the middle class fade away.

Getajob must have a real good job. Take a 5% roll back yourself.
Given that I have no idea what sort of specific work these people do, the conditions they work under, the wages they currently make or the offer they received, I find it hard to have an opinion on the matter.
NMG ..... you are being far too rational for this site .... you are supposed to join in and take pot shots .... be part of the gang ....
