Prince George, B.C. – There may be some more answers about the future of the Mackenzie Pulp mill later today “I am hoping to have some answers but I can’t make any promises” says Mark Rossolo, spokesman for the Pope and Talbot restructuring group.
Pope and Talbot is in court this morning, trying to sort out the deal that fell through. In the meantime, 251 people at the Mackenzie mill, 535 in Nanaimo and those who worked at the P&T mill in Halsey Oregon are facing unemployment as the three mills have all been ordered “idled” until the dispute over the sale of the three mills has been resolved.
Rossolo doesn’t use the word closure “You could call it a soft shutdown, we are still running through everything, but the mills are expected to be down within 48 hours of the notice that was issued on Monday so that means the Mackenzie mill should be down by this afternoon.”
The Mackenzie mill was part of a three mill package deal to Pindo Deli, a subsidiary of Sinar Mas. Also on the block was the Ft. St. James sawmill “That deal expired” says Rossolo of the Ft. St. James sale, “We are trying to get it finalized and close the deal or find a new buyer for the Fort St. James mill.”
There is a provision for severance pay for the workers says Rossolo, that severance package would offer 2 weeks pay.
At the moment, the “idling” is being treated as a layoff.
