Prince George, B.C. – There may be some more answers about the future of the Mackenzie Pulp mill later today “I am hoping to have some answers but I can’t make any promises” says Mark Rossolo, spokesman for the Pope and Talbot restructuring group.

Pope and Talbot is in court this morning, trying to sort out the deal that fell through.  In the meantime, 251 people at the Mackenzie mill, 535 in Nanaimo and those who worked at the P&T mill in  Halsey Oregon  are facing unemployment as the three mills have all been ordered “idled” until the dispute over the sale of the three mills has been resolved.

Rossolo doesn’t use the word closure “You could call it a soft shutdown, we are still running through everything, but the mills are expected to be down within 48 hours of the notice that was issued on Monday so that means the Mackenzie mill should be down by this afternoon.”

The Mackenzie mill was part of a three mill package deal to Pindo Deli,  a subsidiary of Sinar Mas. Also on the block was the Ft. St. James sawmill “That deal expired” says  Rossolo of the Ft. St. James sale, “We are trying to get it finalized and close the deal or find a new buyer for the Fort St. James mill.”

There is a provision for severance pay for the workers says Rossolo, that severance package would offer 2 weeks pay.
At the moment, the “idling” is being treated as a layoff.

Well workers what you are seeing here is a resource grab, your financial predicament is not very high on their scale of problems. The new york money lenders are not happy about the sinful competition from asia and abroad. The money lenders will pull out all stops to keep control not ownership of this resource drain. Your job in the mill is merely collateral damage in this battle and not serious to them.on the world stage big grabs are being made so this leak to asia will need to be plugged and the resource money be directed southward instead of westerly. Gordy and Steven are puppets in these scams and will do as they are told. --how do you and every other canadian get out of this? - simple -don't borrow money & get the old debts into a different world bank or better yet pay it off so the control will stay where it blongs in soveriegn canada.

All true.
Cinar Mas or Asia Pacific or Pinto Deli or whatever they choose to call themselves this week, are a slime outfit.
Now they are just playing games with peoples lives to scam a better deal for themselves.
They are known for that so why is our government even letting them in the door?
They have a reputation for being a slash and burn company who care very little about people.
Chop it up an sell it for scrap is what they do best.
They are also 100 million big ones in the hole,so even if they pull it off,the future still looks very uncertian.
Better they hit the road and they find another buyer...assuming they can!
What a bloody mess!
My condolences to all those affected.
I don't know about the BC mills, but i'm pretty certain Koch Industries will buy PT halsey. Koch is finishing a $100 million expansion at the GP Halsey mill and GP buys steam, water, air, and power from PT. I don't think old Charles would let his $100 mill sit idol. If PT halsey went idol, I'd be out of a job too since our paper machines at GP can't run without steam and water.
I feel bad for everyone involved in the forest industry. Fortunately we are still working 3 days per week. Its a very unstable situation to be in.

Folks hanging around for the Fort St. James mill to re-open must be devistated. It's like fishing-they feed you along..you keep trailing the bait...until your out of water.

I figure these days you have a better chance of winning the lottery, than being employeed in the forest industry.

I think sinar mas will make the same mistake P&T did, Buy up as many assests as possible then go broke a couple years later. These corporations get too big too fast then fall in on themselves then the people who work for them are the loosers in the end.
Its the sign of times isn't it? I mean all of the forest industry is in a huge mess right now. Mills are shutting down like crazy, companies are going bankrupt !!
Just gotta hang in there and things will turn around! It's gonna be some tough times for us folks in Mackenzie but if we hang in there things will hopefully turn around..
Gotta think positivie! Maybe another company will buy your Pope & Talbot in Mackenzie?
Funny how Canfor started this mess in Mackenzie by being the first mill to announce they were going down permanently and now they are the ONLY mill pretty much running!!
Sort of went down hill since the Summer of 07...
It is also interstng the guy who punched the numbers to get the Mckenzie mill to go also did the same thing in Ft.st James workng with people and not sitting there saying shut it down does take effort by the ties good work Mark.
Andy freeze I agree its a shame things didn't work out. However given thier track(Sinclar-whatever) record, it's probably a blessing in disquise.

Its just so hard on workers, that have hope.
