Prince George, B.C. - Twenty three students will make history this month as the first graduating class from the Northern Medical Program.

The program, which operates in conjunction with the UBC faculty of Medicine, has grown from 128 students at UBC taken into medicine in 2004 to 256 students today.

The Dean of the Northern Medical Program says the graduation of the first students is testimony to the vision and perseverance of Northerners, the vision and commitment of government and support by all of the partners.

Dr. David Snadden, says "70% of our first grads have selected family practice, which is double the rate of other Canadian Schools"

Here are the home towns of the class of 2008:

Prince George, Fort Nelson, Fraser Lake, Prince Rupert, Dawson Creek, Quesnel, Kelowna, Rossland, Sechelt, Pemberton, Vancouver, Port Moody, Port Alice, Mica Creek, Whistler and Stouffville , Ontario.

This great news and nice to see!
But how many of these people will be heading out of the north?
It would be nice if they stayed here but it doesn't always work that way, as we all know!
Is somebody talking to them to encourage them to hang around in the northern part of the province?
I would certianly hope so!
I believe the majority will stay in the north - most of them, from what I hear, love it here, and a great number of them are completing their residency in Prince George, so this is an even stronger indicator that many will stay.
Congradulations to all "OUR" new northern trained doctors. You were a long time in comming. I wish you all the best of everything in the future.

A big congradulations to Dr.Raymond and all involved in this great event. Great job.
As I recall only about a third of them will stay in Prince George in the short term, but that figure is not indicative since these days virtually all medical students go on to do a residency. Only a limited number of residency positions are available in Prince George, and residencies in some specialties are not available at all here.
.
CONGRATULATIONS to a fine-looking group of new doctors.

Congratulations too, to UNBC and the Faculty of Medicine.

Wonderful news.
Prince George is not the only area in the north needing docs. 1/3 in PG is fantastic - and many others will be going to other northern communities. Some are pursuing other specialities in other areas of Canada, which is terrific as well. Perhaps these new "specialists" will come back this way...Now THAT would be nice.
