Prince George, B.C. - Twenty three students will make history this month as the first graduating class from the Northern Medical Program.
The program, which operates in conjunction with the UBC faculty of Medicine, has grown from 128 students at UBC taken into medicine in 2004 to 256 students today.
The Dean of the Northern Medical Program says the graduation of the first students is testimony to the vision and perseverance of Northerners, the vision and commitment of government and support by all of the partners.
Dr. David Snadden, says "70% of our first grads have selected family practice, which is double the rate of other Canadian Schools"
Here are the home towns of the class of 2008:
Prince George, Fort Nelson, Fraser Lake, Prince Rupert, Dawson Creek, Quesnel, Kelowna, Rossland, Sechelt, Pemberton, Vancouver, Port Moody, Port Alice, Mica Creek, Whistler and Stouffville , Ontario.

But how many of these people will be heading out of the north?
It would be nice if they stayed here but it doesn't always work that way, as we all know!
Is somebody talking to them to encourage them to hang around in the northern part of the province?
I would certianly hope so!
