About a thousand people turned out at a rally this afternoon to show their support for the striking teachers.

Organized by the Prince George  and District Labour Council,  the rally drew a huge crowd  to the parking lot in front of MLA Pat Bell's  constituency office at 5th and Central.

Tomorrow, City workers who are members of Cupe will withdraw their services in support of the teachers ( see "Cupe Workers Withdraw Services") and will start their day with a rally in front of  Education Minister Shirley Bond's office on 5th avenue.
Their job action will mean the closure of several civic  facilities, including  the Aquatic Centre, Four Season's Pool,  all three Kin Centres,  and the Coliseum.   The CN Centre will be open .

It also means, there will be no garbage collection.

It is not clear how long CUPE will stay off the job.

Scary. Think of how many people have such vital jobs that they can take that time off. Obviously it is time the government trimmed the labour force, there are just too many people with nothing to do. The public service they are supposed to be doing is not that vital. Garbage collection should be privatized. These strikes are a perfect time to think about just how much public service do we need.
oooooo i like how you think yama excellent point all these teachers standing around waving and grinning makes me sick go to work lazy bums you know i'm not crazy about my job but i am smart enough to know my life depends on it teachers, get a grip remember the kids grow up and stop being so selfish
To all you teachers,Gordie ain't backing down, you can hold all the little rallies you want until your blue in the face. The law is the law,go back to your excisting contracts and do your job.The public will not support you much longer, just my opinion.
Rock
I also see a lot of people in the private sector that stand around and dont have much to do. They may not get their pay by taxation but it certainly shows up in the cost of the product.
I worked for the government for many years I liked my job and worked a lot harder then when I worked in private industry and the people I worked with were dedicated and hard working. I dont know where you would see all these lazy people that work in the public sector. I never did have the time to watch and see who was and who was a slacker.
As for privatizing garbage collection it would only be another oppertunity for the private sectot to ripp us off. The employees would work for minimum wage and the employer would spend the winters down in Florida living the good life having a drink or two with Gordie.
