Twenty thousand dollars, that's what the Quinson Elementary Choir needs from CIty Hall to plan its trip to the National Musicfest in Ottawa.

The choir has been invited to take part in Musicfest in Ottawa in May of next year, but the choir can't get there without some financial assistance.

The full cost is just over $92 thousand dollars, but the choir believes it can raise the first 20 thousand, and with $20,000 commitment from City Hall would be enough to have the group confirm its participation in the festival.

City Hall doesn't have much left in its travel budget, and just over $7400 in its "new program" budget so it would be short of the needed $20,000.00, but this Council could make a budget promise of some dollars for this fiscal year and deliver the balance in 2006 through a committment that would be followed through by a new Council .

The music director for the Senior Choristers of Quinson Elementary (grades 4 through 7) says this group is the one that can go all the way, and do the city proud.
Carolyn Doerkson says these are the kind of events that make for better people, and better communities.  "This isn't just about a bunch of kids heading to Ottawa, its about enrichment and providing children with a lifetime experience."

Councilor Glen Scott suggested the Playhouse be "donated" to the choir for some performances to raise funds and all proceeds could be used to help finance the trip. Council has approved  that idea, in addition to  committing $10,000.00 from this year's funds, and looking at other creative ideas for fundraising.

This is the second year in a row the Quinson Choir has been invited to take part in the national festival.

Let me get this straight. The city is funding "extra out of school activities". I hope the city realizes that by doing so their starting a presidence for all other schools to approach council for funding for extra activites. Also does the city and the ones that approached council tonight realize that this could hamper BC Gaming from giving funding to That school. Every year BC Gaming gives money to the schools that apply for funding. Gee I hope those from Quinson know what their doing. Someone didn't do their homework on this one.
