Prince George, B.C. – There won’t be any turning back on the carbon tax, that’s the word from Premier Gordon Campbell.
Despite there being 7 resolutions from the communities within the North Central Municipal Association calling for either an exemption or some sort of rebate to make the increase costs balance off, Campbell says no way. “We are always willing to talk to someone, but we are not going to change the carbon tax.”
The tax is going to come into effect on July 1st. “We are not changing the carbon tax, the carbon tax is there for everyone in British Columbia.”
The Premier says he thinks there has been some “mis-information about the carbon tax and those who oppose the tax don’t have all the facts “Some of the things that I’ve heard anecdotally are really simply not right.” Campbell says there is a higher usage of natural gas in Vancouver than there is in many other parts of the province with the possible exception of Fort Nelson.”
“There is no one in the province that won’t be ahead of the game at the end of this year as a result of the actions that we’ve taken.”
The Premier knows he has a lot of work to do to “sell” this tax “I think there is no question there is a lot of misinformation out there and I think that one of the things that is clear is that when people say that they’re going to be behind this year, they’re not”.
Prince George Mayor Colin Kinsley says the tax will add more than $100 thousand dollars to the heating and fuel bills. If there were an offset, for example increased funding for transit, he wouldn’t have any issues with the carbon tax.
