Carbon Tax Set in Stone

Prince George, B.C. – There won’t be any turning back on the carbon tax, that’s the word from Premier Gordon Campbell.
Despite there being 7 resolutions from the communities within the North Central Municipal Association calling for either an exemption  or some sort of  rebate to make  the increase costs balance off,  Campbell says no way. “We are always willing to talk to someone, but we are not going to change the carbon tax.”

The tax is going to come into effect on July 1st. “We are not changing the carbon tax, the carbon tax is there for everyone in British Columbia.”

The Premier says he thinks there has been some “mis-information about the carbon tax and those who oppose the tax don’t have all the facts “Some of the things that I’ve heard anecdotally are really simply not right.” Campbell says there is a higher usage of natural gas in Vancouver than there is in many other parts of the province with the possible exception of Fort Nelson.”

“There is no one in the province that won’t be ahead of the game at the end of this year as a result of the actions that we’ve taken.”

The Premier knows he has a lot of work to do to “sell” this tax “I think there is no question there is a lot of misinformation out there and I think that one of the things that is clear is that when people say that they’re going to be behind this year, they’re not”.

Prince George Mayor Colin Kinsley   says the tax will add more than $100 thousand dollars to the heating and fuel bills. If there were an offset, for example increased funding for transit, he wouldn’t have any issues with the carbon tax.

It smells like shi7,
It looks like shi7,
It feels like shi7,
Don't eat it Billy Bob I think it's BULL SHI7
Mr Campbell needs to be staked out over an ant hill.
What a joke he is.
This tax is either farce or a great big money grab by our government.
And no one in his party is going to say anything against him...
the last one to do so lost his job really quickly.
think Paul Nettleton!
At least that is my opinion
Was there any doubt? Did we think we could win? I didn't think so. Campbell needs the bucks and we'll be paying his legacy for years and years after the Olympics.
I don't mind paying taxes for the services we need but I am disappointed that so many people cannot see this tax for what it is -- just a tax to be added to general revenue and spent any way the government pleases.
Calling it a "carbon tax" as a way to sell it seems somewhat dishonest to me. The only reason this tax was created was because this government finally recognizes that their policies and projects since 2001 have been much more costly than than they want to admit to you and I.
Let me see. A carbon tax, three levels of government, First Nations demands, and regional districts and dealing with banks on top of all this doesn't make B.C. sound like an easy place to invest. Good luck, Gordo.
Very dissappointed by Campbells stand on this issue.
I have only one request for the PREMIER, ''follow in the foot steps of your father'' before you do more harm to this province.
big smoke screen to play cover up & no one can see the puppet strings, go ahead and steal our last chicken. The only difference between a kingdom and this democracy is in a kingdom you only have one thief. If its carbon taxing i guess we can give gordy a big black carbon boot print on his ass next year at election time. time to pay the debt down and regain control of b.c. this ownership sucks as we are paying for everything and have absolutly no control.
We may not be able to change this tax untel the next election but at lease we can do is quit calling this a "carbon tax" and call it what it really is, a "Olympic tax".
This will be a tax we will pay until the end of time - our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will be paying - until "global warming" ends all life on this planet. It's not going anywhere - EVER.
With oil now hitting over 120 a barrel and Campbell insists on punishing the average citizen, I will now never vote Liberal until he is removed as leader.
Careful what you wish for Ruez. Hard as it may be to believe, if the Liberals replace Campbell, we'll very likely get something just as bad or worse. And if you consider just who that might be from the existing 'talent' in his 'inner circle', it's absolutely certain it won't be anyone better.

Watch for the big-time 'selling job' on the merits of the 'carbon tax' (financed with OUR tax dollars), that'll start running in all the media about seven or eight months before that stupid "fixed election date". The one that spelled the END of RESPONSIBLE government in BC by gulling the public into believing that a government could do as it pleases for a full four years without further reference to the people.
Don't get me going on that "fixed election date" baloney ---- I'm trying to relax before I place my head on the pillow.
Let's face it, government can only obtain money to spend from one of, or a combination of three sources.. Taxes, borrow the money (CSB's) or print the money. Since the province can't print money, they rely on the other two. Taxation and borrowing. So, you better decide how much more you are willing to take, or make some significant changes in the next election. I believe this government is out of control and has lost touch of our reality. Too bad, but as far as I am concerned, their days are numbered. Chester
That "fixed election date" is just another way of trying to "Americanize" a perfectly good system that had evolved in a manner that provided (or could provide, when it's used properly),
both REPRESENTATIVE and RESPONSIBLE government. On a constant basis.

The Premier could, (as he properly should), always refer any contentious position his government was taking "back to the people", by calling an election and seeking another mandate on the matter, and the question of his general ability to govern.

Any Premier who used this provision frivolously ran the risk of electoral defeat.

The point is, before Campbell's "fixed election date" nonsense the government always had to be prepared to "face the people". Those that weren't, who stayed too long,
who had the smell of "fear of the electorate" on them, were doing something they shouldn't have been doing. And had no business being government any longer.

WAC Bennett, in my opinion, was our most successful Premier. And WAC was NEVER afraid to go to the polls when he felt he needed confirmation that the public was in support of his government's direction. Contrast THAT with what we've got now.
Chester, while it's quite true that under the Constitution the Province can't "print money", it is debatable still, I believe, whether or not a Province controls it's own "credit".

The fact that BC can obtain financing in its own name, and does it's own books, and is responsible in Civil Law for 'property rights', indicates that that it may be a lot more sovereign in respect to "credit" than might be expected.

All "money" is "credit"; but not all "credit" is "money". And a great many things can be done by various means of "credit", that don't technically involve legal tender "money".

while we are into the nitty gritty of money , get one thing straight we do not print our own money federally either -the bank of canada has been sold off to private foreign shareholders long ago just as the american federal reserve has been formed in 1911 ask any normal voter they still think the government is in control- not so. we are allowed to own but not control this country, that way the new york banksters get to pull the strings of our puppet democraticly elected leaders we are not alone the U.S. and 68 other countries will do as they are told -to get out of this mess, pay off the debts and print your own money, hundreds of tons of our coinage used to be copper-nickle-silver pure metals while we own they control, thie metal has been replaced by what us old guys call slugs, a magnet will pick up every one of our new coins as they are plated only- you guessed it the valuable metal is now in the banksters vault. the carbon tax is the same it is headed for the banksters vault right under our nose-see gordy jump can you see the strings yet?
Campbell uses the word "anecdotally"....what,does see the anger as being funny?
What a complete arrogant moron!
Socredible is correct...he should call an election but that is not going to happen!
He knows the beating the Liberals would take!
Just on principal,I will NOT vote Liberal again, inspite of the fact that the options are limited!
If we allow ourselves to be intimidated by the likes of him because we think we don't hsve a choice,we are beat, and things will get only get worse.
(so where IS the opposition?)
If his party had any balls they would call a leadership review and dump him before he destroy the party itslf from within.
It also shows his complete distain for anything and anyone who doesn't reside in the lower mainland!!
Time to push back!
I would tend to agree that the "arrogance" of this Liberal Government will be, in part, it's undoing. It is clear that Gordon Campbell and his lick spittle tooties have done little to nothing for those British Columbians who live north of Hope. Yet with a stroke of a pen, the Liberals will throw another 100 million at the Trade and Convention Centre. What BC needs is responsible Government. That being MLA’s who represent their Constituents, regardless of their political stripe. On Tuesday May 12, 2008 is our chance to vote for change.
May 12, 2008 is a Monday.

northern taxpayer, the Bank of Canada is owned by the Government of Canada. And has been since the late 1930's.

When it was formed by Prime Minister RB Bennett's Conservative government in the middle of the Great Depression, it was jointly owned by the government, which held a majority of its stock, and private shareholders.

When Liberal leader MacKenzie King campaigned in the Federal election of 1935 one of the planks of his platform was "controlling the money power". Which, at the time, many who voted Liberal thought meant fully utilising the Bank of Canada in a way authorized in its charter ~ for the benefit of the people of Canada.

MacKenzie King, after he was elected, re-interpreted this to mean that he was in favour of buying out the private shareholders, and fully nationalizing the Bank. Which he did. It has been fully government owned ever since. But to whose benefit it REALLY operates is something else again.

It does indeed have our money printed. The banknotes we use have "Bank of Canada" on the face of them, not "Dominion of Canada" as the Treasury notes once did. The ones that were used as money, along with private banknotes, prior to the formation of the B of C, and centralization of note issue into its hands.

Any banknote is simply a 'debt obligation' of the issuer to the holder. It is a 'promise to pay', which originally carried the premise that what would be paid 'on demand' was gold. At no time, however, was our money ever fully backed by gold, nor could it ever be. Not without progressively strangling all trade and commerce. Which would be then impossible to conduct using that kind of money.

Fractional reserve banking is a precursor to a modern, industrialised economy, since it is (or should be), based on the potentialities of productive capacity. Which are ever expanding and progressing as technological advancement continues.

The PROBLEM with our present money system ~ the one whose EFFECTS are exploited by 'banksters' for private gain, and at a higher level, to pursue the pre-determined policy of a 'monopolization' of control of real wealth, is with the way 'accounting', at the macro-economic level, is currently done. It could be corrected, but disseminating the knowledge of how to do it to the general public has so far proved to be nearly impossible. The control of banking, and the control of the media, are 'concentric'. (Except for Opinion 250 ~ so far!)
Well said Bond!
"On Tuesday May 12, 2008 is our chance to vote for change."

They have been campaigning like crazy ... only a couple more days to go.....

;-)

I think you meant 2009 ......
Fixed election days work if we have a majority government. Not too much of a difference.

It will be interesting to see how it works with a minority government. We could have a stagnant situation for 4 years and the result could undo the fixed election date.
all is great in the 604 (or so it appears). I don't the Libs give a rat's a$$ about anyone north of Kamloops.
sorry, should read "I don't think the Libs give a rat's A$$......
Lets pay our carbon tax and be happy and ignorant. China pays less than half of what we pay at the pump.
guess its time for a change-over in victoria.....your screwing yourself up for the next election campbell!
"all is great in the 604 (or so it appears). I don't the Libs give a rat's a$$ about anyone north of Kamloops"

I'd suggest that unless you directly rely on forestry, it's actually not too bad everywhere else as well.
I don't think these Liberals have any idea of the can of worms they are about to open. Reading campbell in todays paper was somewhat bizaar. Somehow Northern BC will be the benificiary of massive green investments. Ethanol, bio fuel, blah, blah. How a new tax will promote this is unclear.
He also mentions that if we don't do something soon, our exports to the states will be cut back. Does anyone have a clue what he's refering to? We collectivly need to fight this. Spam our MLA's with e-mails for the next month. This is just what our forestry needs, higher diesel prices on top of all time record fuel costs. I am still in a state of disbelief that they would even contemplate this foolishness.
It's worldwide, dow7500. Carbon taxes didn't originate with the new green Gordo. Gordo never had an 'original' thought in his life. He's a "Global groupie", along with Al Gore, and, God help us, America's probable next President, Mr. "It's time for change" Obama. "Change", is about all we'll have left after taxes if they have their way. Just look at their big backers, and to the Bankers of their big backers. And you'll see the kind of 'change' they've in store for us. They aren't, and won't be, the ones hurting from the effects of the carbon tax.

And it doesn't have diddley-squat to do with 'saving the environment', or stopping the effects supposedly caused by man's contribution to so-called global warming. It's simply one more way to concentrate the control over wealth into the hands of an elite, and eliminate the independent producer.
"Carbon Tax" Legalized white color theft. Nothing more, nothing less. Go Purple!
It's interesting the the carbon tax/money grab will rise to 7.4 percent in 2012.
I would say that 2 years after the Olympics we will probably know full well just how far in the hole we really are and I am betting it won't be pretty.
And is it a coincidence that this is when the Campbell crew will be scratching to pay the piper for the gross amount of tax dollars they are spending now for the big show?
I also believe we will be well into a much weaker economy by then, and I think they know that.
Listening to Gordo spout off about the carbon tax going ahead without any changes and all the wonderful things that are going to happen in the north, how much better off we will all be, is like listening to a robot.
The man IS an idiot and a total control freak!
And yet,all his rhetoric sounds like he is being programmed by someone else behind the scenes!
His logic is way out in left field, and obviously dreamed up by someone who has never spent a few winters in the northern parts of the province!
I think what is REALLY annoying is the lack of support by our elected representatives like Rustad,Bond,or Bell et all.
These butt kissing puppets know better than anyone from the lower mainland what it's like up here in the 250, and yet they don't have anything to say in defense of those who saw fit to elect them!
More of the Paul Nettleton syndrome I suppose, based on intimidation and fear, and that in itself shows just how little we really matter to the demi-gods in Victoria!
I can't speak for anyone else, but when I vote for someone, I expect the interests of my community and area in which I live to be addressed by those very well paid people.
(and let's not forget, that was also Gordon Campbell's doing without any real consultation)
In the end, their chubby little paycheques are still ongoing, which is more than they can say for a lot of other people here in the north and other places in B.C.as well.
I have been a Liberal all my life, but what I am seeing now disgusts me and regardless of the outcome in the next provincial election,I cannot support this crap!
In the end,it will be the people of the north, ingenuity, and sheer guts that will pull it off without much help from our so called ELECTED REORESENTATIVES!
He wanted the winter olympics so damned badly.....well he got them, now he has to try any method he can to dig out from under the huge stacks of bills the W.O. have caused.......sigh
And what ever happened to, "Tax cuts work!"?

Ah, how quickly we forget!
dow7500:-"He also mentions that if we don't do something soon, our exports to the states will be cut back. Does anyone have a clue what he's refering to?"

We have to artificially raise the "costs of production", dow, that's what he's referring to. Or do you seriously think ANY country is going to let our imports in unrestricted just because we have a NATURAL advantage over them in some way?
