Prince George, B.C. - It's  taken two and a half years, but the Cameron Street Bridge replacement project will get underway Monday  May 12th.

Mayor Colin Kinsley says the final two approvals needed for the project have been given clearing the way for construction to start at the beginning of the week.

IDL Projects will begin the job with the  removal of  part of one span of the bridge to be saved for its heritage value.

The  winning bid for the project   was a price just over $9 million and  the City already has  approval to  borrow up to $6 million to cover the cost of the project a further $1.9 million has been set aside as a contingency  fund.

Heritage??? That thing is hideous. Just because something is old does not make it "heritage" in my books. Waste of $$$
Try to think of the design and what it would look like if it was maintained as it should have been.

$9.5Million plus versus $750,000.00 is where your waste of $$$ is.

As one who was born and raised here, I agree with the heritage label. Glad to see it preserved.
I am glad a piece is being preserved myself.

Hopefully it goes to say the railway museum yard, or is set up permanently in Ft george park or something.
Its from the early days of PG, and i am sad to see it go.
It is sad time for we who are the true old timer's. It is a heritage bridge and should be maintained as a foot and cyclist bridge to fit into the river trail system.

To me, it is an insult to take a span and preserve it.

I am afraid we have had a Council who does not respect what Prince George truly is: a beautiful spot with two rivers. The rivers have become a dirty industrial area. This Council inherited the old thinking of the Mercier Staubel days with their myopic vision. Industry polluting beauty and the loss of rivers for the citizens to enjoy.

There never was a Cameron Street bridge, it was a name made up by the old myopic crew so that they could more easily dispose of it. There were vested industrial interests in getting rid of the bridge and getting a new bridge. All it is does is keep hazardous goods travelling through the heart of the City.

The bridge that is being destroyed is our heritage and is more properly the old Nechako Bridge.
I think this is part of PG's problem. Let go of the past and lets move forward! Put industry OUT of downtown or move downtown. This is the weirdest city I've ever seen and I was born and raised here, I'm not new.
With all due respect to rochial's statement

How will get to where we are going without remembering where we have been?

Or perhaps to put it a little more eloquently.... How will we get to where we are going if we don't know where we came from?
